A “memory prosthesis” brain implant has enhanced human memory for the first time. The device is comprised of electrodes implanted in the brain, and is designed to mimic the way we naturally process memories, and can boost performance on memory tests by up to 30 per cent. A similar approach may work for enhancing other brain skills, such as vision or movement, says the team behind the work. “We are writing the neural code to enhance memory function,” says Dong Song of the University of Southern California, who presented the findings at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington DC...

Faith’s left forearm and hand were amputated when she was 9 months old, according to Build It Workspace, where her new limb was printed in 24 hours. The Winner Is... Fake Dog Testicle Creator By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN, Associated Press Writer Thu Oct 6, 9:40 PM ET BOSTON - Gregg Miller mortgaged his home and maxed out his credit cards to mass produce his invention — prosthetic testicles for neutered dogs. What started 10 years ago with an experiment on an unwitting Rottweiler named Max has turned into a thriving mail-order business. And on Thursday night Miller's efforts earned him a dubious yet strangely coveted honor: the Ig Nobel Prize for medicine. "Considering my parents thought I was an idiot when I was a kid, this is a...

The Food and Drug Administration yesterday permitted a unit of Johnson & Johnson to market an artificial spinal disk in the United States as a new form of treatment for people with severe lower back pain. The disc, called the Charité (pronounced shar-ee-TAY), represents the first of a wave of such devices that are expected to become available over the next decade as an alternative to spinal fusion surgery. Spinal disk implants are projected to become a billion-dollar market for medical device companies in the next decade, although many orthopedics researchers think that artificial disks will eventually be overtaken by...
