Dubai's Julian Castaldi putting the final touches to an exhibition of Polaroids ___________________________________________________________________________________ Instant photography is cool again, says Dubai artist, Julian Castaldi “It’s for an office party,” quips Raj Thomas as he hands over his debit card in a Dubai store, in return for a “Polaroid” camera that’s made by Fujifilm. “I think we’ll have some fun with it for a few weeks before the novelty wears off.” The force of nostalgia is strong with instant cameras (which, no matter the brand, will always be referred to as Polaroids, just like every vacuum cleaner used to be known as...

NEW YORK – A striking black-and-white photograph of the majestic Bridalveil waterfall is among numerous that landscape photographer Ansel Adams took with Polaroid film — a technology many celebrated artists embraced to produce innovative and surprising works. ... The image is among 1,000 Polaroid and gelatin silver prints by some of the biggest names in 20th-century photography being offered at Sotheby's on June 21-22 as part of a bankruptcy court-approved sale. The prints are being sold by PBE Corp., a previous owner of the Polaroid brand. The Polaroid camera was the invention of Edwin H. Land, whose revolutionary 1948 technology...

A convicted killer from Newport News is hoping a Polaroid picture will prove his innocence. Defense lawyers say the picture was kept secret from them until recently. And it shows something that might have shaken up Newport News' murder case against David Wayne Boyce. It shows a haircut. Lawyers working with the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project say a murder suspect in the 1990 slashing of a Newport News motel guest had shoulder length hair. And at Boyce's trial a year later, a police official testified Boyce also had long hair. But this police Polaroid, taken by detectives on the day of...

ENSCHEDE, Netherlands — In this small town just across the border from Germany, a small group of Dutch scientists and one irrepressible Austrian salesman have dedicated themselves to the task of reinventing one of the great inventions of the 20th century — Polaroid’s instant film. Digital cameras are ubiquitous, cheap and easy to use — the reasons Polaroid stopped making the film last year — so what this group in Enschede is attempting may seem hopelessly retrograde. But to them, that is exactly the point. They want to recast an outdated production process in an abandoned Polaroid factory for an...

In breaking news out of Minnesota, American icon Polariod is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This is a tragedy and should not be allowed to happen! Polariod should be given a bailout! Polaroid is "too big to fail," just like the automakers. Polariod is an American icon, just like the automakers. Wrong. Polaroid is in trouble. Maybe it is because they failed to be on the cutting edge of technology and adapt to the age of digital photography. Maybe it is because they were mismanaged. Maybe competitors just made better products. I have no idea why Polaroid is in...

BOSTON (AP) — Polaroid Corp. is dropping the technology it pioneered long before digital photography rendered instant film obsolete to all but a few nostalgia buffs. Polaroid is closing factories in Massachusetts, Mexico and the Netherlands and cutting 450 jobs as the brand synonymous with instant images focuses on ventures such as a portable printer for images from cell phones and Polaroid-branded digital cameras, televisions and DVD players. This year's closures will leave Polaroid with 150 employees at its Concord headquarters and a site in the nearby Boston suburb of Waltham, down from peak global employment of nearly 21,000 in...

If you've ever wished you could print photos directly from your cell phone, a new mobile photo printer from Polaroid is coming that can do just that. Perhaps even more intriguing is the technology the printer uses: it´s inkless. Designed by ZINK ("Zero-Ink") Imaging, the ZINK printer concept doesn´t require ink cartridges or even dye rolls. Instead, it incorporates dye crystals inside the specially patented ZINK paper, secured underneath a glossy protective layer. When heat from the printer is applied to the cyan, yellow, and magenta crystals in the paper, the appropriate crystals are "melted" to release color. While ZINK...

NYC police on watch for Port courthouse bomber By Andy Smith and Stephanie Akin Staff writers New York City police are targeting a man who bombed Newburyport Superior Court 28 years ago, saying he poses a threat to next week's Republican National Convention. But an anti-war activist group has accused police of trying to "smear" their reputation by linking the group with the convicted radical who terrorized New England with a series of bombings in the 1970s. New York City police say Richard J. Picariello, 55, is among 50 activists whose criminal histories will earn them extra attention next week....

I've done a little bit of research into John Kerry's Senate votes, and specifically legislation that he sponsored as a Massachusetts Senator. I'd appreciate any input or further information from any fellow Freeper researchers. I've found some interesting bills sponsored by Kerry, that all have connections to either Massachusetts businesses or his wife's Heinz Foods. All of these bills relate to import duties, and to differing degrees they all had the potential impact (if enacted as law) to give kickbacks to corporations in Massachusetts (and a certain ketchup maker in Pittsburgh). 107th Congress (2001-2002) S.2869 - "A bill to facilitate...
