Studies of ancient preserved plant remains from a medieval archaeological site in the Pamir Mountains of Uzbekistan have shown that fruits, such as apples, peaches, apricots, and melons, were cultivated in the foothills of Inner Asia. The archaeobotanical study, conducted by Robert Spengler of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, is among the first systematic analyses of medieval agricultural crops in the heart of the ancient Silk Road. Spengler identified a rich assemblage of fruit and nut crops, showing that many of the crops we are all familiar with today were cultivated along the ancient trade...

The California almond is getting a bad reputation. At least that’s what the numbers show. According to an April report released by the Pacific Institute, a non-profit research firm based in Oakland, almonds are not the most water intensive crop grown in the Golden State. In fact, almonds tie with pistachios for fourth place in the ranking of California’s water intensive crops and require on average four acre-feet of water per acre. One acre-foot is approximately 326,000 gallons of water. Alfalfa and rice are the top two water users, averaging five acre-feet of water per acre a piece, though alfalfa...

So I'm watching the football game and I see this ad come on for "Wonderful Pistachios". Levi Johnson comes on camera with a big bodyguard. The announcer says something to the effect of "Levi Johnson does it with protection now". So I emailed "Wonderful Pistachios" this: Just to let you know I'm never going to buy any Wonderful Pistachios ever again. The day that you use a bottom feeder like Levi Johnston in an ad for your product is the day that I decide your company is not worth supporting with my patronage. You've alienated at least half of America...

California's pistachio producers could potentially boost research and promotion efforts and do more to combat disease, under Agriculture Department recommendations made public Tuesday. Growers from Arizona and New Mexico will be folded into an existing marketing order, a grower-run organization which will gain new powers under the proposal. "We're going to reduce the risk of a food safety crisis," said Bob Klein, manager of the Fresno-based Administrative Committee for Pistachios.

Eating a handful of pistachios every day may help heart health, new research has found. The study, published in The Journal of the American College of Nutrition, and conducted by James N. Cooper of George Mason University and Michael J. Sheridan of Inova Fairfax Hospital, looked at individuals with relatively high cholesterol who replaced high-fat snacks with pistachio nuts on a daily basis.
