Please investigate correlation between peanut allergies and autism (medical community will deny any relationship ) but look at the onset dates of sudden increase in cases along with the population effected (children) and the rate of occurence ...seems like the same thing might be triggering both symptoms/diseases.

Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack ... This familiar line from the baseball anthem "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" doesn't have the same happy meaning for Timothy Haverkamp that it does for most fans. Timothy, a first-grader from Ada Elementary, is allergic to peanuts. "He was allergic to everything when he was little. His brother is allergic to peanuts, too," Jane Haverkamp, Timothy's mother, said. "He never had a life-threatening emergency with peanuts, but we don't keep any at home." Timothy attended Wednesday's West Michigan Whitecaps game without fear of an attack. The team hosted its second...

NORWALK, Iowa -- Peanut butter is off the menu at a central Iowa elementary school.   School officials at Oviatt Elementary School in Norwalk are also asking parents to keep peanut products out of lunch sacks.   The move comes after the parents of one student asked that peanut butter be removed from the menu because their child is allergic to peanuts and could have a life-threatening reaction.   School officials said medical experts have concluded that even peanut oil on the child's skin or the aroma of peanuts could trigger a serious reaction.   Principal Tom McLaughlin said ...

NEW BRITAIN -- A year ago, Nicholas Jones' peanut allergy forced his family to bolt from a New Britain Rock Cats baseball game just minutes after arriving. Earlier this month, the 6-year-old sports fan threw out the first pitch of a game. Through a special arrangement with the Class AA Eastern League team and a local support group for people with severe food allergies, families with allergies were recently given their own "food-free" section of New Britain Stadium. The section was cleaned before the game and extra ushers were posted to keep people with food out of the area. For...

Cobb smooths flap: Schools can have peanut-free zones By MICHAEL KOLBER Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer Peanut-free zones are in; total bans are out. And that's Cobb's peanut policy, in a nutshell. A new elementary school principal said Tuesday she would be banning all peanuts -- from candy bars to PB&J sandwiches -- on campus to prevent health problems. But Wednesday, the district said the principal misunderstood the county's policy and that all schools would continue creating peanut-free zones when necessary."We're not banning peanut butter at that school or any Cobb County school," said Tony Arasi, an assistant superintendent of schools.A...

The principal of the Nickajack Elementary School outside Atlanta recently decreed that no student would be permitted to bring peanuts or peanut butter to school. She is not alone. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, schools in "at least nine states" now ban peanuts and peanut butter. The reason? A few students are highly allergic to peanuts, and if not treated in time, the reaction can lead to death. Lest 1 or 2 percent of the students have a bad reaction to peanuts (a reaction that is entirely treatable by the school nurse), the cheapest, tastiest, healthiest food that most kids...

An elementary school's reaction to one student's allergy to peanuts has parents complaining about "Nazi-like" peanut police searching their children's backpacks. Angry parents packed a parent-teacher meeting last night at Valle Verde Elementary School in Walnut Creek, Calif., to protest the school's new "peanut reduction policy." Under the policy, kindergarten classrooms and a special playground area have been designated "peanut- and tree nut-free zones." Students and visitors are required to wash their hands. Backpacks and lunch boxes are searched and peanut products are confiscated. The policy is in response to lobbying by parent Leora Cope, whose 5-year-old son's allergy is...

It's no joke! Cobb school bans peanuts By MARY MACDONALD Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer The classic childhood lunch, a PB&J on white bread, will be confiscated on sight this year at one of Cobb County's elementary schools. So will peanut butter crackers and cookies, peanut butter cups and anything else containing Georgia's top-selling homegrown snack. The ban on all things goober is no joke. Several children entering Smyrna's Nickajack Elementary School this year have allergies so severe they are life-threatening, said new Principal Constance Carter. Some people are so allergic that even breathing peanut dust can trigger a reaction. Carter...

Peanuts no small danger On the rise and potentially deadly, allergic reactions are forcing schools to keep high-risk kids segregated Sunday, November 02, 2003 Tiffany Y . Latta THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Though students at Wright Elementary School jockey for a place to sit at lunchtime, Evan Smith takes his time. The Dublin first-grader always has a seat. Evan, 7, sits at a peanut-free table, far away from even the scent of Jif, Peter Pan or Skippy. His friends can sit with him only if their parents have signed notes swearing their children’s lunches don’t contain peanuts. Since he took two...
