Despite self-perceived sensitivities, study finds gluten and wheat safe for many people with IBS
Medical Xpress / McMaster University / The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology ^ | July 21, 2025 | Premysl Bercik et al

A new study has found that many people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) who believe they are sensitive to gluten or wheat may not actually react to these ingredients.

The study included participants with clinically diagnosed IBS who reported feeling better on a gluten-free diet. These individuals were given cereal bars to eat containing either gluten, whole wheat, or neither—without knowing which was which, in a random order.

Researchers found the number of people who experienced worse symptoms was similar across all three groups, including the gluten-free placebo, suggesting that expectations and beliefs, rather than the ingredients themselves, may be driving symptoms in many cases.

"Not every patient who believes they are reacting to gluten actually does. Some truly have a sensitivity to this food protein, but for many others, it's the belief itself that's driving their symptoms and subsequent choices to avoid gluten-containing foods," says Premysl Bercik.

When participants were later told which bars caused gastrointestinal symptoms, most did not change their beliefs or their diets. Bercik says the findings suggest that some patients with IBS may benefit, apart from dietary guidance and also from psychological support and personalized care.

"What we need to improve in our clinical management of these patients is to work with them further, not just tell them that gluten is not the trigger and move on. Many of them may benefit from psychological support and guidance to help destigmatize gluten and wheat and reintroduce them safely in their diet."

The study thus sheds light on why many people with IBS continue to avoid gluten, even when it may not be the true cause of their symptoms. According to researchers, the psychological phenomenon known as the nocebo effect, where negative expectations alone can trigger real symptoms, could partly be the reason.

They neglect to say what ingredients were in the placebo and whether on not they were contaminated with glyphosate. Round-Up Ready Wheat and? Soy perhaps? I have no problems eating bread products in Europe. More gaslighting.

I wonder how much of this gluten reaction has to do with the pesticides that are sprayed on wheat.

I am skeptical since many have real physical responses. Where was this research conducted I wonder?

I think it’s the chemicals they allow in US bread. When I stopped eating it my health significantly improved and I lost my big fat gut almost immediately.

I had a blood test for a gluten allergy when a nurse practitioner, knowing I was an RN, asked if I wanted any other tests run on my blood work. I didn’t, but I react badly to wheat products, so I suspected the glyphosate in Roundup. Despite reacting, I couldn’t pass up wheat products while in France, my cost: benefit analysis deciding it was worth it, and found I didn’t have a problem. Others have reported similar and as well concluded the culprit to be Roundup. Of course with the farmers being forced to buy Roundup Ready Wheat, too much money would be lost by Monsanto, bought by the Big Pharma company, Bayer. Control the food, control the people, as well as kill them with it. If people can’t eat bread, it makes it difficult to take Communion, doesn’t it. It’s the war as old as time.

I believe that people are suffering from problems eating wheat, but it’s not the gluten. It’s the pesticides and genetic modifications, both of which we aren’t allowed to discuss, that are adversely affecting us believing that the wheat itself is bad.

There are innumerable documented instances of Americans going to Europe, eating their breads and pastas, and having zero reaction from them. That should be the beginning of the story.

Wheat isn’t safe for anyone who wants to stop taking Statins.

A few years ago I read the book: “ Wheat Belly : Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health “ by Wm. Davis, MD, that said wheat is the cause of cholesterol building up. Decided to go without wheat for a couple of months, went back to my MD to check. Cholesterol fine.

If you want to get off Statins, don’t eat wheat. You can buy BFree seed breat at Natural Grocer, AMZ, and even Walmart has a good version made of rice.

“Gluten free” is a marketing gimmick. People see it and think, “wow, it must be good if it is gluten free.” I am willing to bet 99% of the people who buy “gluten free” items have no idea what gluten is.
