U.S. Navy veteran Dario Raschio was all smiles Saturday as he awaited a special honor from U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, who joined him at Portland Community College's Southeast Campus to present the 100-year-old with a handful of medals. "I feel I'm no hero," said Raschio, dynamic and spry, before the event. "I don't accept it as being a hero. I accept it as being a part of my job." Shortly after Wyden began speaking, though, protesters erupted in the back of the room, shouting "hands-up, don't shoot!" More than 100 pushed through the doors, banged on the windows from outside...

Two have pleaded guilty in the armed robbery of two University of Minnesota students over the summer, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Monday. Javonta Williams, 20, of St. Paul and Lavelle Grayson, 23, of Minneapolis were accused of confronting two students walking to their residence hall, forcing them to lay face down in the grass, and then taking their IDs, cash and cards, Freeman says...

Demonstrators chanting, "Black lives matter," converged in the Mall of America rotunda Saturday as part of a protest of police brutality that caused at least part of the mall to shut down on a busy day for holiday shoppers. The group Black Lives Matter Minneapolis had more than 3,000 people confirm on Facebook that they would attend. Official attendance figures weren't immediately available, but organizer Mica Grimm says she believes about 3,000 took part.
  • Ferguson Was the Spark — Eric Garner Is the Fire

Here’s a look at the future, and probably not that far into it. People will learn two things: 1) That an officer was not indicted for murdering Eric Garner—black, 43, and detained simply for selling single cigarettes—despite the fact that the killing was recorded from start to finish for all of America to see. 2) That an officer was not indicted for killing Michael Brown after Brown had stolen from a store, refused the officer’s request to step aside and perhaps tried to grab his gun, with the officer shooting when Brown repeatedly lunged toward him for some reason, with...
  • "Hands Up, Walk Out" at UMass

Approximately 800 University of Massachusetts students, faculty and staff participated in a national “Hands Up, Walk Out” protest Monday afternoon. The protest was organized in response to the Missouri grand jury’s decision not to indict white police officer Darren Wilson in the Aug. 9 shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. Participants, angered by the decision, assembled in front of the Student Union at 1:01 EST to coincide with the moment Brown was shot. A four minute, 30 second moment of silence was held to remember the four hours and 30 minutes Brown lay dead on the sidewalk in the...

  • For some, location of Brown's hands irrelevant

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) -- The word spread within minutes of Michael Brown's death - a young black man with his hands raised in surrender had just been shot by a white cop. Soon, "Hands Up. Don't Shoot!" became a rallying cry for protesters in the streets of this St. Louis suburb and a symbol nationwide of racial inequality for those who believe that minorities are too often the targets of overzealous police. Yet the witness accounts contained in thousands of pages of grand jury documents reviewed by The Associated Press show many variations about whether Brown's hands were actually raised...
