In an email to Global Okanagan, the Islamic Centre of Kelowna condemns the attack saying the incident has nothing to do with the Muslim faith. “I can understand and appreciate often people’s feelings that: ‘Oh we need to defend Islam again’ whereas I would rather express my feelings a bit differently,” says spokesman, Hamid Butt. “We don’t have to defend Islam rather our focus should be to educate (the) community at large that these types of incidents are sad indeed and has nothing to do with Islam.” Butt says he feels that Muslims are being singled out and misrepresented in...

The head of Ottawa's parliamentary security is being hailed as a hero after he reportedly shot and killed a suspected male gunman who was trying to enter the caucus rooms. Kevin Vickers, Parliament Hill's sergeant-at-arms and former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, shot and killed the suspect, Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino told the Toronto Sun. "All the details are not in, but the sergeant-at-arms, a former Mountie, is the one that engaged the gunman, or one of them at least, and stopped this," Fantino said. "He did a great job and, from what I know, shot the...

Michael Zehaf-Bibeau has been identified by Canadian officials to their American counterparts as the suspected gunman, multiple U.S. officials told CNN. The gunman was killed after two shooting incidents -- one at the Canada War Memorial, and another just minutes later nearby inside Parliament. Bibeau, who was born in 1982, was a convert to Islam and had a history of drug use before he converted, two sources said. Investigators haven't provided any possible motives for the shooting. The violence at Parliament comes just days after Canada raised its terror alert Friday. The suspect in Monday's vehicle attack, Martin Rouleau Couture,...

Another indication to suggest that this is a jihad terror attack. There were two soldiers standing guard at the war memorial in Ottawa near Parliament, and a gunman shot one of them, a witness told CNN on Wednesday. Peter Henderson, a journalist, said other soldiers doing drills nearby ran to help the fallen soldier. Henderson said he knew the person shot was a soldier because of the ceremonial uniform the soldier was wearing. There were "several shooting incidents in downtown Ottawa" on Wednesday morning, police said on Twitter. "Incidents occurred at National War Memorial, near the Rideau Centre and Parliament Hill." All Ottawa police buildings remain on lockdown and are closed...
