While some Hollywood celebrities used their acceptance speeches during the 93rd Academy Awards to disparage police, Tyler Perry’s went viral for a good reason.Perry, who won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 93rd Academy Awards, used his time on stage to urge Americans to “refuse hate.”"It is my hope that all of us would teach our kids … just refuse hate. Don't hate anybody," the actor and director said. "I refuse to hate someone because they are Mexican, or because they are Black, or white, or LGBTQ. I refuse to hate someone because they are a police officer. I...

The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, broadcast live from both Union Station and the Dolby Theatre in L.A. on ABC, hit a staggering low. Per Nielsen Live+Same Day preliminary national numbers, an average of 9.85 million viewers tuned in on Sunday evening to watch a more intimate and stripped-down version of the Oscars in the midst of a pandemic. That’s a 58.3%, 13.75 million viewer drop-off from last year. The Academy’s third host-less show in a row scored a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 in the fast national ratings, a 64.2% dip from 2020. For comparison, last year’s ceremony garnered a...

Tyler Perry, the director who won the humanitarian honor at the Academy Awards, spoke of unity during his acceptance speech Sunday and said his mother taught him as a boy to refuse hate and refuse to succumb to "blanket judgments." "And in this time, with all of the internet and social media and algorithms and everything that wants us to think a certain way, the 24-hour new cycle…it is my hope that all of us would teach our kids, and I want to remember: just refuse hate. Don’t hate anybody." His message comes at a trying time in the country....
  • Oscars 2021 tortured viewers for more than 3 unbearable hours

If you opened the window and listened closely Sunday night, you could hear it: the sound of millions of remote controls changing the channel during the 2021 Oscars. And after last night’s debacle — the worst Academy Awards of my lifetime — they may never return. Producer Steven Soderbergh, the man who directed “Traffic” and “Erin Brokovich,” among many other fine films, helmed the broadcast and was determined to make it more intimate and cinematic than usual. Alright, as movie critic, I’ll play ball. “Steven Soderbergh’s The Oscars” gets 1 star. The night was nearly non-stop drudgery, zero humor and...
  • The Oscars Will Make Even Less Sense This Year with Its Inane Mask Policy

This Sunday, the 93rd Academy Awards will finally be staged, roughly two months later than usual due to Covid protocols, and that viral scourge is leading to an odd decision for an event that usually is known for its oddities. Take that foundation, place it in California, and roll in the pandemic and we are assured of seeing some strange behavior. Last year’s ceremony went off just prior to the outbreak and the shutdown of the country, so the celebrities were not involved in the practice of Covid couture. Sunday, however, we are sure to see many a luminary resplendent...
  • Oscars: Hollywood Erects Walls to Keep Celebrities Safe During Academy Awards

Hollywood is full of anti-border wall celebrities. But on Tinseltown’s biggest night, ten-foot security fences have been erected around Union Station in Los Angeles, California, to keep celebrities safe and the public out during Sunday’s 93rd Academy Awards. The perimeter around Union Station is cordoned off by security fences and the entrances to the building are blocked by similar structures. Signs posted to the fences bear a stark warning: “This property is closed to the public. No entry without permission.” The security fence runs completely counter to the anti-border wall mantras which flood out of Hollywood.

An Oscars unlike any before will get underway Sunday night, with history on the line in major categories and a telecast retooled for the pandemic. The 93rd Academy Awards will begin at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC. There will be no host, no audience, nor face masks for nominees attending the ceremony at Los Angeles’ Union Station — this year’s hub for a show usually broadcast from the Dolby Theatre. In contrast with the largely virtual Golden Globes, Zoom boxes have been closed out — though numerous international hubs and satellite feeds will connect nominees unable to travel. Show producers...
