Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after officers fatally shot a 73-year-old man in Haliburton County on Wednesday morning. The man had refused to wear a mask and allegedly assaulted a grocery store employee before driving away, Ontario Provincial Police say. Police were called to a Valu-Mart in Minden, Ont., just after 8 a.m., OPP Sgt. Jason Folz said. Officers tried to stop the suspect's car, but they refrained "in the interest of public safety" before doing a follow-up investigation, Folz said. Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the man drove away, and an officer saw the car and started following...

A Democratic candidate for a judicial seat in Plainfield, Conn. was forced to answer questions about her husband this week after a watchdog group exposed his ties to the white supremacist movement. The Norwich Bulletin newspaper reported on Thursday that attorney Anna Zubkova, who is running for a seat as a probate judge, said she does not share the views of her husband, who runs a blog called "Mindweapons of Ragnarok" where he waxes about his views on race and white pride. The newspaper reported that the couple have been married for 17 years. "He did not have those views...

Anti-fascist activists had a difficult time pushing back against James O’Keefe’s investigative reporting during a planned press conference Thursday. They got kicked out of a food court, but not before showing pornography to a reporter. The DC Antifascist Coalition had booked a room at the National Press Club to hold a press conference in which they would unveil damaging information about O’Keefe and his group Project Veritas. In the lead-up to President Donald Trump’s inauguration, Project Veritas released videos which resulted in the arrest of a member of DisruptJ20 and foiled a plot to use stink bombs at an inauguration...

OPP cedes control of Caledonia road Won't go to calls from non-natives on 6th Line Six Nations police given sway on Caledonia roadAmid concerns over lack of police action in Caledonia, the Ontario Provincial Police have turned over part of their policing responsibility on the outskirts of the town to Six Nations officers, the force confirmed yesterday. OPP officers will no longer respond to calls from non-native home and property owners who live on the 6th Line, a county road running along the southwest border of a housing development occupied by native protestors — a move that has some residents...

Land Claim Chronology Map of Disputed Area Native protesters occupied a construction site near the southern Ontario town of Caledonia over a land-claims dispute. They halted construction on a new suburb with 10 partially built homes. Protesters had been camped out at the site since February 28, erecting tents, a teepee and a wooden building. Early in the morning on April 20, police in cruisers and vans arrived at the site with tear gas cannons and Tasers, arresting 16 people. More protesters arrived soon afterward and barricaded the road leading to the site. Plumes of black smoke billowed in...

Good liberal that I am, I have always tried to be on the side of the aboriginal inhabitants of North America. Lately, though, I've been hit with a bout of cognitive dissonance over the standoff in Caledonia. News reports about members of the Six Nations taking over part of the town, destroying property and making life miserable for the citizenry challenged my impression of the Iroquois as a group of underappreciated victims of the perfidy of the white man. Last weekend, I decided to check out the situation in Caledonia for myself. Initially, I saw little sign of conflict. The...

The Ontario Provincial Police made what appears to be a major raid on a home in southwest Ontario near Shedden, Ont. Sunday afternoon, close to where the bodies of eight slain men were found Saturday. Jean Francois Fracheboud, a journalist with Quebec network TQS, was on the scene as a large number of officers raided a home located north of Highway 401 between Iona Road and Aberdeen Line, near the village of Shedden. Police would not release any details, and would not confirm whether the raid was linked to the ongoing murder investigation. Fracheboud said it seemed likely the events...
