Russian President Vladimir Putin came out swinging at the U.S. on Friday in an aggressive speech as he announced the annexation of four Ukrainian regions. In a message that was already expected to be hostile, Putin further escalated threats against Ukraine and the West by saying the U.S. set a "precedent" of nuclear warfare by hitting Japan with atomic bombs during World War II. Fears have mounted since last week when Putin said he was "not bluffing" after he warned that Moscow would use "all weapons systems available" to defend Russian territory.

On today's Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski said of Ben Carson "I want to be very careful with my words, but he just doesn't sound completely connected with everything." Judging from her halting cadence, Mika clearly seemed to realize that she was treading on some very controversial mental-health ground. The lead-in to her "connected" comment was her observation "he tried to kill his mother for God's sake! . . . we have been listening to this man talk in a flat monotone tone about taking a hammer to his mother's head." Brian Baird made Wednesday in recounting a death threat he received earlier this month triggered criticism from Clark County Republicans on Thursday.</p> <p>The death threat, delivered to Baird’s Washington, D.C., office in a phone message Aug. 10, said, approximately, "You think Timothy McVeigh was bad, there is a Ryder Truck out there with your name on it," according to Kelly Love, Baird’s Vancouver district director.</p>
