An off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s deputy was killed just before 1:30 a.m. in a shootout during a robbery at a gas station in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. The Chicago Sun-Times reported the incident occurred at a station “in the 500 block of East 67th Street.” The suspect approached the deputy, 31-year-0ld Rafael D. Wordlaw, and allegedly “tried to rob him.” Wordlaw and the suspect then exchanged gunfire and Wordlaw was shot in the chest. Wordlaw attempted to drive himself for medical care, but ended up crashing his vehicle. He died from his gunshot wound.

Off-duty Fulton County Deputy James Thomas was shot and killed early Thursday while driving on Bolton Road in the Riverside neighborhood of Atlanta. The driver of a van spotted Thomas driving erratically at about 4:30 a.m. and tried to pass him, 11 ALIVE reports. While in the process of passing Thomas, the van driver heard gunshots, and a collision ensued, after which both Thomas and the van driver crashed.

Pot may be legal in Colorado, but you can still be fired for using it. The state Supreme Court ruled 6-0 Monday that a medical marijuana patient who was fired after failing a drug test cannot get his job back. The case was being watched closely by employers and pot smokers in states that have legalized medical or recreational marijuana. Colorado became at least the fourth state in which courts have ruled against medical marijuana patients fired for pot use. An off-duty officer with the Houston Police Department fatally shot a robbery suspect outside a convenience store on Sunday night. The veteran cop was coming to the rescue of a man who was jumped and beaten by two men as he was leaving the store with groceries. The officer, identified as 22-year Houston Police Department veteran C. Rodriguez, told investigators he noticed two men hiding behind a dumpster outside of the store, arousing his suspicion. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was accosted by several people on Van Buren Street around 1:30 a.m. this morning, said Thomas Fennelly, the county’s chief assistant prosecutor.
