Cop Holding Baby Kills Home Invader
June 22, 2007
HAYWARD An off-duty police officer was holding his infant son when he shot and killed a man who forced his way into his parents' home, authorities said.
The rookie San Leandro officer was at his parents' house in Hayward when a man fleeing police knocked on the door Wednesday afternoon. The suspect, accompanied by a woman, stormed into the home and got into a fight with the officer. Holding his 7-month-old baby, the officer shot the man, who later was pronounced dead at a hospital. The baby suffered bruises.
The woman ran away but was caught several blocks away. Hayward police had tried to pull the couple over on Interstate 880 about 15 minutes before the shooting, believing the man was wanted on outstanding warrants, but he sped away. Police don't know why the man fled because they later found he wasn't the person police thought he was when they tried to stop his vehicle.

Call me sentimental, call me old fashioned, but I just LOVE a story with a happy ending.
I hope that baby had ear plugs in! Way to go dad!
This cop will be suspended pending an investigation. If the cop is white and the dead man not...this is only the beginning. It matters not that it happened in the cop’s parents home. What does matter is the race of the “victim”.
I guess he didn’t have a log to throw.

| HAYWARD Police are releasing few additional details about a Wednesday afternoon shooting in which an off-duty San Leandro cop shot and killed a man who tried to force his way into a Fuller Avenue home. "Things are still unfolding," Hayward Police Sgt. Jim Denholm said. Authorities continued to interview witnesses on Thursday, and would not release the name of the man who was shot and the woman who allegedly was with him at the time. The police officer's name, age and level of experience also were withheld. The officer is on routine paid administrative leave from San Leandro Police Department until Hayward police complete their investigation, San Leandro Police Lt. Tom Overton said. "We're just thankful he is OK," Overton said. "We're waiting to see what happens with Hayward's investigation." The man who was shot apparently fled from Hayward police on Wednesday when they tried to stop his car on West Tennyson Road near Patrick Avenue. He abandoned the car on Happyland Avenue, according to Hayward police. The man then knocked on the door of a house in the 22000 block of Fuller Avenue and asked to use the phone, Overton said he was told by Hayward police investigators. The off-duty officer, who answered the door with a baby in his arms, let the man use the phone on the porch, but a fight began when he tried to get the phone back, Overton said. The officer was choked by the intruder and the baby suffered a contusion to his head and bruising to his torso, Overton said. The officer shot the intruder several times, and when police arrived they found the man just inside the home. He was transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he later succumbed to his wounds, Hayward police said. Both the baby and the off-duty officer were treated at the hospitaland released. Police would not provide any details as to the baby's age, whether the officer was holding the baby when he shot the intruder or whether the officer used his police weapon in the shooting. "Preliminary information suggests the intruder was a stranger to the area and that the resident, an unsuspecting off-duty San Leandro police officer, shot the intruder in defense of his family," a news release issued Wednesday evening by Hayward police said. Police said the house does not belong to the officer. The woman thought to be with the intruder was found hiding a few blocks away from the home on Fuller Avenue and had not been arrested, but was being interviewed by investigators Thursday.

Great pics... you should start a thread with all of them.
> Call me sentimental, call me old fashioned, but I just LOVE a story with a happy ending.
How is *that* a happy ending? From the article:
>> The suspect, accompanied by a woman, stormed into the home and got into a fight with the officer. Holding his 7-month-old baby, the officer shot the man, who later was pronounced dead at a hospital. The baby suffered bruises.
An off-duty officer was assaulted in his parent’s home by a home invader. He was forced to fight, and then to shoot, the assailant while holding his baby. The baby got hurt.
The only up-side to this story is that the bad guy didn’t win. All of the rest of it would have been a horrible and terrifying experience for everybody to have lived thru in real life. I doubt anybody is feeling “happy” about it.
> Call me sentimental, call me old fashioned,
No, I don’t think so.
I didn't read that in the linked article...did I miss it, or is that your assumption?
I’d bet it was really Chuckie SCHUMER.
Was that Chuckie Bloomer, or Chuckie Schumer?
All of the rest of it would have been a horrible and terrifying experience for everybody to have lived thru in real life. I doubt anybody is feeling happy about it.
HUH?????? I would venture to say it WAS a horrible and terrifying experience for the officer, his baby and his parents to have lived through. Therefore, the officer did what he had to do to protect his family. I would also venture to say I think his FAMILY is feeling “happy” about it as is he. The bad guy DIDN’T win. So, that’s always a “happy ending.”
> HUH?????? I would venture to say it WAS a horrible and terrifying experience for the officer, his baby and his parents to have lived through.
So far, we’re connected...
> Therefore, the officer did what he had to do to protect his family.
Yup... still connected...
> I would also venture to say I think his FAMILY is feeling happy about it as is he.
Nope — disconnected. He and his family are probably feeling traumatized, and their baby is probably still recovering from his bruises. Unless the cop is Dirty Harry (classic definition of Sociopath) he is probably receiving counseling for the shooting.
> The bad guy DIDNT win. So, thats always a happy ending.
The only positive thing about the whole sordid mess is that the bad guy didn’t win. Nobody’s lives have been improved and there is no reason for anybody involved to crack out the Champagne and celebrate. Hardly a “happy ending”.
The officer, his baby and his parents walked away ALIVE.
The BAD GUY didn’t and his partner was caught blocks away.
Sorry, I’d call that a happy ending and that’s my opinion and nothing can change it so...we are NOT connected. Period.
