President Donald Trump has made disparaging remarks about Oakland many times, and he did it again in the Tuesday night debate with former Vice President Joe Biden. Fox News' Chris Wallace, who moderated the debate, asked the president about his frequent assertion that cities with Democratic leadership are more violent than Republican-run ones. When Wallace said Republican-controlled cities show similar trends of violent crime, Trump launched into a stream-of-consciousness response that, at one point, included an assertion that Oakland was "more violent" under President Barack Obama and asked where law and order was under the Obama-Biden watch. "Look at Oakland,...

In 2014, Joe Morrissey, then a 57-year-old Delegate to the Virginia General Assembly, plead guilty to a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and was sentenced to 12 months in jail (with six months suspended) because of a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old office assistant at his law firm. On Tuesday, he won his election to Virginia Senate. I'll give you one guess what his political affiliation is. That's right, he's a Democrat. And he won his election with more than 60 percent of the vote.

OAKLAND -- Some were attending a birthday party. Others were working at a downtown a hair salon or on their way to a fast-food restaurant. In less than 24 hours over the weekend, 12 people were shot along Oakland streets -- three of them fatally, their deaths marking the city's 63rd, 64th and 65th homicides of the year. As of Sunday evening, investigators had not identified a motive or a suspect in any of the shootings, and none appeared to be connected, police said.

Quiet words from Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on 3/5, directly indicated a new three-year ban, at least in offshore oil drilling leases. Pure facts dictate this move will kill any American initiative to produce all of its oil independently. More than 2/3 of the American public supports such a move per a Rasmussen poll. It is unknown why the Obama Administration would make such a virulent move, and not allow America to become more oil-independent in a time of major global political upheaval

OAKLAND -- An ebullient Mayor-elect Ron Dellums today embraced voters' endorsement of his vision to make the city a model, saying he will soon set up citizen groups to help him deal with the city's public schools, crime, economic development and other issues when he takes office Jan. 1. "It is a responsibility I accept with honor, humility and optimism," the progressive former congressman, 70, said at a news conference that was his first public appearance since the June 6 election. "We can solve the problems of Oakland. We can be a great city." His chief opponent in the race...

For those watching the Oakland mayor's race, there was a bit of news Friday as Ron Dellums slipped below the threshold needed to avoid a runoff, but many more said they simply aren't watching the horse race. World Cup fever. Soaring gas prices. The war in Iraq. Violence in Oakland. Those loom larger on many residents' radar than the mayor's race, in which former Congressman Dellums maintained a significant lead over City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente. Dionecio Espinoza voted for De La Fuente, but he's not fretting over the fact there still was no winner three days after...

OAKLAND -- Former U.S. Rep. Ron Dellums ended months of speculation today and announced he will run for election as Oakland mayor next year in a move that shakes up the race to succeed Jerry Brown. Dellums' announcement came after months of urging by community activists, including a drive by independent volunteers who collected about 8,000 signatures begging the former congressman to run for office in his hometown. He credited that network with helping him make his decision. Dellums, a 69-year-old former Marine, served 28 years in the House of Representatives before retiring in 1998.

WASHINGTON The husband of the C-I-A agent whose cover was blown is clearing up some confusion over a comment he made to C-N-N. Joseph Wilson said yesterday that his wife, Valerie Plame, "was not a clandestine officer the day Bob Novak blew her identity." Today, he says he was only pointing out that once her identity was blown, his wife lost her ability to be a covert agent. He says he wasn't suggesting that she had stopped working undercover for the C-I-A beforehand. Wilson is continuing his attack on White House adviser Karl Rove, for discussing his wife with columnist...

Willina Hickman was 30 when she arrived here in 1878, and she found it difficult to contain her horror at what she saw. Years later she recalled: "I looked with all the eyes I had. 'Where is Nicodemus? I don't see it.' " Nicodemus, Kan., was founded by freed slaves and is populated by their descendants. Ora Switzer, 102, is its oldest resident. "The families lived in dugouts," she said. "The scenery was not at all inviting, and I began to cry." Nicodemus was home to some 600 black settlers, mostly former slaves from Kentucky. It was among the first...

OAKLAND, Calif. Jun 4, 2005 — A controversial "shaming campaign" aimed at fighting prostitution here will include photos on some billboards of men who have been convicted of soliciting sex. The billboards will carry the headline: "How Much Clearer Can We Make It?" At a news conference Wednesday, city officials stood under a 10-by-22-foot billboard with the images of four convicted men intentionally blurred so they could not be recognized. "We're warning everyone: Next time, the image won't be blurred," City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente said. The billboards will only show images of people convicted of soliciting sex,...

OAKLAND -- Police Chief Richard Word's department is having a hard time winning support for its reaction to large groups of protesters. Monday's shooting of hard bean bags, wooden dowels and rubber pellets at protesters reopened a wound that festered after the department's handling of street melees following the Oakland Raiders' victory in the AFC Championship game and loss in the Super Bowl. Back then, the department was criticized for not using enough force and allowing renegade fans to tear up businesses along a 20-block swath of the Fruitvale district. On Monday, the department was vilified for using too much...

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Rowdy crowds that took to the streets after the Oakland Raiders' Super Bowl defeat left parts of the city strewn with broken glass, charred hulks of burned cars and a fast-food restaurant with nearly every window broken. Police in riot gear responded with rubber bullets and tear gas, and briefly closed some stretches of city streets. At least 23 people were arrested, mostly for public drunkeness, authorities said. About 10 vehicles were set on fire, and crowds broke the windows of at least one television news van, police and witnesses said. One group of young men set...
