The fight over the California Dream Act, controversial legislation signed by Gov. Jerry Brown to help illegal immigrant students pay for college, is not over. Earlier this week, State Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, R-Hesperia, started gathering signatures for a referendum that would eliminate part of the act. He wants to overturn Assembly Bill 131, which Brown signed on Oct. 9 allowing illegal immigrant students to apply for state-funded scholarships.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM Act, should be brought up for a vote before Congress goes home for the year. Failure to do so will leave the 65,000 illegal immigrant children who will graduate from American high schools in the spring living in limbo unable to further their education, seek gainful employment or become productive, taxpaying members of society. The DREAM Act would permit those who came to the U.S. before the age of 16 to attain U.S. citizenship if they joined the military, attend college for two years and have clean records. One interesting development among squishy Senate Republicans. I heard from Sen. McCain’s office yesterday asking me to remove his name from the list of fence-sitters. An aide wrote: McCain has “clearly expressed his opposition to the DREAM Act and will be voting against it when it eventually comes to the floor.”

Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants received encouraging news this week when President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., moved to open a path to citizenship for immigrants by supporting the DREAM Act.
