Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich defended former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain on Monday, saying Americans might be more interested in finding a “solutions-oriented leader” than obsessing over another political scandal. *snip* “And I just think there’s this huge gap between the gossip that fascinates political reporters, and the average person’s concern about the price of housing, the availability of jobs, solving the budget deficit without crushing the middle class, a lot of things that are, frankly, at a substance level are dramatically more important for most Americans.”

He's come up from 4th or 5th on my list to probably #1 at the moment. Obviously I can't stand Romney. I wasn't for Cain even before the scandals because I simply do not think the 999 Plan is a good idea. I'd rather not give the government yet another form of taxation to impose on us. I'd much prefer a flat-tax, which Newt is a proponent of. Perry is obviously scum. Palin is out, which sucks. Paul, some days I love him, some days I think he's really crazy. Bottom line is this, Newt has great ideas on taxes...

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has jumped into second place in Iowa, ahead of Mitt Romney, according to a poll released Monday. An automated poll conducted by We Ask America, found that 18 percent of likely caucus goers would vote for Gingrich if the caucuses were held today. Cain is still in first place with 22 percent, despite weathering a week of sexual harassment allegations. Gingrich edges out Mitt Romney, who is in third at 15 percent. Gingrich has witnessed large gains since his numbers dropped and his staff deserted over the summer.

So far in this cycle Gingrich is playing the role that McCain played in the 08 cycle. Both had their difficulties toward the end of the summer with very little campaign cash on hand and were written off before making a charge based on merit and respect(although maybe not love) within the party and the media.

If you are as sick of the sound bite debate format as I am, there is cause to cheer today. C-SPAN has announced that it will televise Saturday night's debate between Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain in Texas. We shall finally have a shot at the longed-for Lincoln-Douglas style extended discussion.

So, dear readers, Newt Gingrich has finally announced formally that he’s running for president. Newt built his political career from my home state, Georgia. I even reside in the district Newt represented during his final stint in D.C. Prominent Georgia politicians have already lined up behind him. Newly elected Governor Nathan Deal has signed on, along with former Governor Sonny Perdue and longtime-beloved Georgian Zell Miller. Georgia businessman Herman Cain, who continues to battle past allegations of sexual harassment, draws the most support nationally for the Republican nomination. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely GOP Primary voters shows Cain with 26% of the vote over former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s 23%.
