Mychal Judge, the fallen chaplain of the Fire Department of New York City, will be honored with a statue in front of his former parish, according to a story from Religion News Services (via The Huffington Post):When All Saints Church sought to signal its hospitality to gays and lesbians, the Catholic parish in Syracuse, N.Y., turned to a well-known image from the 9/11 attacks: five firefighters carrying a body from the wreckage of the World Trade Center. The body belonged to the Rev. VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The killing of Osama bin Laden, a man who was America's face of evil for nearly a decade, left Christians, Jews and Muslims relieved, proud or even jubilant. For their religious leaders, it was sometimes hard to know just what to say. There is at least some dissonance between the values they preach and the triumphant response on the streets of New York and Washington to the death of a human being — even one responsible for thousands of killings in those areas and around the world. "Justice may have been served, but we Catholics never...

It started, as wondrous stories often do, in Ireland. It ended yesterday at Engine 1/Ladder 24 on W. 31st St., with the presentation of a magnificent sculpture whose centerpiece honors Father Mychal Judge and the 342 other members of the FDNY who died on 9/11. The artwork - by Waterford Crystal master engraver Sean Egan - depicts the heartrending tableau of Father Judge, FDNY chaplain, being carried from the ruins of the twin towers. Representations of those ruins bracket the men, in memory of everyone who died that day. Laboring on his own time and intending perhaps someday to present...

The hand-carved Waterford crystal sculpture depicting the image of New York firefighters and police officers carrying the body of Father Mychal Judge away from the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. NEW YORK -- Sean Egan, an engraver at the famous Waterford factory in Ireland for 33 years, said he found a large piece of discarded glass at work one day that seemed to resemble the arch of a stained glass church window. He put it aside and a short time later happened to come across the widely used photograph of five New York firemen and policemen carrying...

Remembering Father Mychal Judge, NYC Fire Chaplain "Lord, take me where you want me to go; Let me meet who you want me to meet; Tell me what you want me to say And keep me out of your way." It was about 8:50 a.m. on September 11th when word reached West 31st Street about the tragedy in lower Manhattan. The thick, black smoke was already billowing skyward. At Engine Co. 1/Ladder Co. 24, the firefighters climbed into their gear and headed downtown. Across the street at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, Mychal Judge did the same. Father...

The city is reconsidering plans to name a new Staten Island ferry boat the "September 11th," after an informal poll of riders found almost 80 percent are against it. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that he had not anticipated the opposition but will take it into consideration. “Quite honestly, I was surprised at that,” the mayor said Tuesday. “I think there would be a lot of people in favor of naming it 9/11, but apparently there are not. So, we are in the process of trying to set up a process to get other input.” The city Department of Transportation said...

New York's firefighters are known by many names. Traditionally, they are called the Bravest. After 9/11, many called us the Heroes. Within the FDNY, some refer to themselves as the Brotherhood. Unfortunately, many firefighters have other names for their colleagues that are racial, ethnic or sexual slurs. I know, because I served more than 20 years in the FDNY, and I'm also a gay man. I heard those terms used and saw them scrawled on walls countless times in firehouses throughout the city. On New Year's Eve, one firefighter attacked another in an assault preceded by what some newspapers are...
