Bin Laden's death a tough subject for the pulpit
AP ^ | 5/8/2011 | Brock Vergakis

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The killing of Osama bin Laden, a man who was America's face of evil for nearly a decade, left Christians, Jews and Muslims relieved, proud or even jubilant. For their religious leaders, it was sometimes hard to know just what to say.

There is at least some dissonance between the values they preach and the triumphant response on the streets of New York and Washington to the death of a human being — even one responsible for thousands of killings in those areas and around the world.

"Justice may have been served, but we Catholics never rejoice in the death of a human being," said the Rev. Stephen Mimnaugh.

He did not mention bin Laden during Sunday's morning Mass at Manhattan's St. Francis of Assisi, the church of the late Mychal Judge, chaplain of the Fire Department of New York and the first recorded victim of the Sept. 11 attacks in the city.

***

As he left a Quaker meeting in Philadelphia, Fred Koszewnik of Marlton, N.J., said he thought the celebrations were "kind of icky."

This journalist seems to have had a bit of trouble finding any actual preachers who shared his own squeamishness, or very many who confuse, as Brock does, the pulpit with the editorial page, but ya gotta give him credit for making a game effort to support his lame thesis.

Agreed. If you need to go to quakers to support your anti-war-when-it-suits-you leftism, you’ve not got any kind of case.

I wouldn’t make the blanket statement that Christians, Jews, (and especially) Muslims were relieved, proud or even jubilant. A lot of Muslims are in their usual state of full blown rage and a lot of Christians and Jews feel guilty about being Chrisitians and Jews and hate to see us act against terrorists. Some may even have genuine, heart-felt objections to taking a life no matter what he did.

I stifle myself lest I start a war with the Catholic excusers.

I’m not sure why Bin Laden’s death should be a subject for the pulpit (or ambon). I rather expect to hear preaching about the Gospel or Epistle appointed for the day, or perhaps the saint being commemorated according to the Synaxarion.

If it is impossible to celebrate the life, then you can celebrate the death.

A church that is Not Bible based would have a tough time with capital punishment. Even David beheaded Golliah as punishment. Christ was crucified as though a “guilty” person and took on our sins - the wages of sin is DEATH.

God is at ease with capital punishment and He makes that very clear in the OLD TESTAMENT. It carries forward in the NEW TESTAMENT as well. It is humanisits parading around as “Christians” that have issues with capital punishment.

My feelings on the death of OBL can best be described as “grim satisfaction”. I don’t particularly “rejoice” in his death, but do I don’t have problems with anyone who does.

The fact remains that Bin Laden was just one man and will be replaced sooner or later by someone just as fanatical and charismatic. The cancer of Islam will continue to spread. The clash of civilizations is far from over and will not end in our lifetimes.

There is plenty of work still to do.

The death of someone so evil hasa place in any Christian church. Trying to avoid it, does not. Perahps you need to read your Bible where God calls for capital punishment. Wake up YOUR church and READ the BIBLE!

Let the liberal hand wringing commence.

Sheesh.

“If it is impossible to celebrate the life, then you can celebrate the death.”

We celebrate birthday and have funerals. At many funerals today we “celebrate” what they did on earth. If what they did on earth is vile, as in the case of OBL, so be it! TALK about that too and CELEBRATE that there is ONE LESS EVIL PERSON ON EARTH! Paise GOD for THAT FACT!

Seems there are two things to talk about.

Thing One: Whether the killing of OBL was necessary and/or appropriate.

Thing Two: Whether "celebrations" in the street were/are appropriate as a response to Thing One.

I figure most religious leaders would have little trouble with Thing One, while odds are the response from the pulpit on Thing Two would be more varied.

Many Catholics rejoice over his death. It is the HUMANISTIC teachings of the Catholic church that they wince at.

“Even David beheaded Golliah as punishment”

Not only that but according to Scripture he walked around afterward carrying Goliath’s head by the hair.

As far as I know this was not forbidden.

The main-line protestant lefties would have been all over this if Bush had done it. Obama gets a pass because he’s willing to raise taxes, take guns, and kill babies.

I guess the Jews had it all wrong when CAPITAL PUNISHMENT happened to evil Kings and conquers. The Bibleis FULL of examples of them and others REJOICING over the defeat of an EVIL person.

I wonder ... was anyone depressed when Hitler died or Polpot or Stalin? Not me! While I was not alive when many of these evil leaders existed, I REJOICE that at least those folks are GONE! God is ALWAYS in control and CAPTIAL PUNISHMENT is something He agrees with.

I do weep when INNOCENT babies are given capital punishment when they are INNOCENT beyond any reasonable doubt. They really haven't had a chance to show their sinful nature. When someone is GUILTY beyond ANY reasonable doubt as in the case of OBL, I REJOICE when he received GENTLE capital punishment for all the people he MURDERED on 9/11 and had BEHEADED in the name of his god, Satan. Till anyone draws their last breathe, they have the same opportunity to repent and accept Him. This, not capital punishment will determine WHERE they spend THEIR eternity.

I have no problem with the Pulpit addressing the Ben-Laden issue. Clear to me that God removes evil men in his own good time..and People have and do “Rejoice” when evil is destroyed. The problem is never that God is slow to take care of evil in this world...it’s that man gets in the way of and has created laws to protect and enable evil to prevail in many cases....In the end though, God will acccomplish what He wills and purposes with our co-operation or not.....and He will use the willing no matter how we might judge or determine the outcome.
