BP Rig Missed 16 Inspections Before Explosion This post was written by CBS News investigative producer Laura Strickler. Newly released government inspection reports show BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig was only inspected six times in 2008 even though government regulations say drilling rigs should be inspected every month. In total, the rig missed 16 inspections since January 2005, according to the documents. An Interior Department official told CBS News a rig might miss an inspection because it's moving from one place to the next or there might be a delay from weather. Inspectors found five incidents of non-compliance at the...

Early in the 90’s, we saw a militarization of this area...and an enormous jump in the number of Border Patrol agents and their various apparatuses,” Velarde said. “In the case of Sergio Adrian Hernandez Huereka, he was killed point blank by a Border Patrol agent. It’s a very ... violent space, as we see the mix of people” and the “state repression that exists there in all its forms.” Velarde compared the U.S.-Mexico border to occupied Palestine. He said: “The similarities are so obvious, especially to somebody who lives on the border. The fact that they can justify deadly force...

Forget about the mess in the Gulf. Forget about the plunging U.S. and world economies. The question on everyone’s mind is “Who are Obama’s picks for the World Cup?” Until now, the U.S. president has remained above the fray, preferring to let others handle the day to day controversies that inevitably creep into these divisive contests. But he cannot remain on the sidelines forever. That puts Mr. Obama in a potentially explosive situation. Will he support the U.S.A., the purported land of his birth, will he pay homage to the traditional European powers, or will he root for some underdog?...

Theodore Trueheart (Teddy) would rather be sailing By Judi McLeod Monday, November 13, 2006 Truly named is the irrepressible Theodore Trueheart, pictured above on one of his good hair days. Theodore Trueheart is well named, because he comes at you straight from the heart. But don’t expect him to answer to anything but “Teddy” or “Ted” because Theodore Trueheart is only the name on his pedigree papers, and the always ready to gambol Teddy, much more casual than that, is one of the guys. Brine is in his blood. Teddy took to the sea as a mere pup, and longs...

June 09, 2010|By Dan Tracy, Orlando Sentinel Angry bicyclists are hoping to strike back and repeal a law taking effect in September that would force them to ride in bike lanes or hug the right side of the road. They've even enlisted the help of state Sen. Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando, himself an avid bicyclist and tri-athlete. "I'm one of them. … I'm open to just about anything," Gardiner said, including filing a bill next year. And the bikers might not stop with just the law. Another possibility they are considering is doing away with bike lanes altogether. That could result...

JSC Today Headlines 1. Joint Leadership Team Web Poll 12. June is LGBT Pride Month 13. Weight Watchers at Work - Note Room Change ________________________________________ 1. Joint Leadership Team Web Poll Nearly 70 percent of respondents last week recognized "Deep Space" as the bogus Mission Directorate. Sounded pretty real though. You clearly believe that the head of BP is having the most difficult time with his public image by far. It may take a long while for that to be fixed. This week the question is about the recent SpaceX launch. Did they perform better than you expected? Just like...

WASHINGTON, June 8 (UPI) -- U.S. Marines are trying to commit suicide at a record pace this year, despite a program begun last year aimed at preventing such attempts, Corps data indicate. Statistics indicate 89 Marines tried to take their own lives through May, most often by overdose or by cutting, USA Today reported. Projections indicate there will be more than 210 attempted suicides this year, military officials said. In 2009 a record 164 attempted suicides were recorded. The Marines last year introduced a training program for sergeants and corporals aimed at suicide education, urging them to learn more about...

<p>Well, at least he's still got Sir Paul McCartney. At the White House last week, the 67-year-old crooner was gushing in much the same manner as his own groupies did at Shea Stadium in 1965. "I'm a big fan, he's a great guy," McCartney told American critics of President Barack Obama. "So lay off him, he's doing great."</p>
