Antipoverty campaigners in Japan proposed Wednesday the nation's own poverty reduction goals modeled on U.N. Millennium Development Goals, ahead of a House of Councillors election expected to be held in July.
The 10-point Japanese version of MDGs worked out by civic groups introduce specific numerical targets for reducing poverty rates among Japanese, increasing the levels of minimum wages, boosting government spending for social security, securing housing for low-income people and enhancing access to education, among others.
Looks like the UN is trying to turn the world into the Greece/California model.
Not so sure this is going to be an easy sell to the Japanese, 90% or so of whom are middle class and like it that way. You find very little sympathy there for the professional gimme class. Their typical answer to even older people who can’t make ends meet (one of the few groups which generates their sympathy) is to give them a job which involves a bucket, broom or mop or manning a toll booth.
