The U.S. Coast Guard has launched a search for a U.S.-flagged containership with 33 crewmembers aboard reported to be caught in Hurricane Joaquin, near Crooked Island, Bahamas. The Coast Guard reported Friday that at approximately 7:30 a.m. Thursday, watchstanders at the Coast Guard Atlantic Area command center in Portsmouth, Virginia, received an Inmarsat satellite notification stating the 735-foot cargo ship El Faro was beset by Hurricane Joaquin while en route to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Jacksonville, Florida. The notification said that the ship had lost propulsion and had a 15-degree list.

According to an internal email sent by Christopher Meyer, an assistant VP with the Office of Safety and Security, the FedEx shipment of was sent from Science Engineering and Education Company in Edina, Minnesota. The two Michigan women lost in the wilderness for almost 2 weeks survived on Girl Scout cookies and cheese puffs, police say. Leslie Roy, 52, and her sister Lee Marie Wright, 56, were on vacation in a remote part of Michigan when they became stranded by heavy snow on April 11. A body found in a New Jersey river is that of missing Wall Street Journal reporter David Bird, who disappeared more than a year ago, authorities announced Thursday. Terri Horman's decision came days after a judge rejected her request for an anti-stalking order against a woman allegedly harassing her at work in Eugene...
