The United States Air Force (USAF) has confirmed it will pull out of three UK airbases. US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said the Americans will leave RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk and RAF Alconbury and RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire. The move is part of a programme to save £320m ($500m) a year across Europe. The USAF lease the RAF bases. Mr Hagel said he understood it would mean job losses and thanked those who had supported the US Air Force. "I know that this will result in a reduction of our local host nations workforces at some locations; I value the...

The airfield at Thorpe Abbots was once the home of the 100th Bomb Group, whose legacy and "Box D" tail marker are carried on by the Airmen and aircraft of the 100th ARW today. The Royal Air Force Mildenhall honor guard, along with Bagpiper Dave Harper,...

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla., Aug. 29, 2005 — When Master Sgt. Jeffrey Porter left the 321st Special Tactics Squadron at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England, he did not realize he would be stationed with his son. Now, as a radio maintainer with the 720th Operations Support Squadron here, he could not be happier. “It's like a dream come true,” the sergeant said. “To convince my son to join the Air Force is one thing, but to leave Mildenhall and a year-and-a-half later have him join me at Hurlburt Field — now that's awesome.” Senior Airman Jeffrey Porter, a gunner with the...
