The latest round of layoffs at CNN has hit some of the network's biggest names. Political analyst Chris Cillizza, 46, who has been covering national politics, the White House and Congress for the cable giant since 2017, after coming over to the network from The Washington Post, was among those who were let go this week, Variety reported. Cillizza tweeted Thursday afternoon, stating, 'my time at CNN was an absolute blast. I got to work with smart and dedicated journalists everyday,' he said. 'I'm sad it's at an end but also excited about what the future holds for me. Stay...

MCNEAL — Once it housed soldiers stationed at Fort Huachuca, then it was moved to McNeal and was filled with the sounds of happy feet dancing and the chattering of ladies at coffee cloches. Now abandoned, there are new inhabitants that really are no fun — killer bees. The irritable, six-legged flying pollinators have been in the building on Frontier Road for a number of years, tending huge honeycombs and creating problems for those who walk their dogs, ride horses or just take a morning stroll. If one puts out nectar for the hummingbirds and orioles in spring within the...

Although White House Chief Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler claims to have learned about the IRS audit scandal only last month, she had three unprecedented one-on-one meetings last year with the Treasury Department’s chief lawyer, who has known about the inspector general’s investigation of the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservative nonprofits since at least June 2012. The Treasury lawyer in turn has a long history of extreme left-wing agitation. Christopher J. Meade, Treasury Chief Counsel, met with Ruemmler on September 27th, December 11th, and December 13th, 2012, according to White House Visitor Records requests. The two had never met one-on-one prior...

MEADE - Someone tossed a brick through a plate glass window early Friday morning at a hotel that is the focus of controversy here because the proprietors hung a rainbow flag out front. Loren Borger, chief of the Meade Police Department, said no arrests have been made but that police and the Meade County Sheriff's Department are investigating the incident. He suspects a local had a hand in the matter, which occurred sometime between 4:15 and 5:15 in the morning. J.R. and Robin Knight hung a rainbow flag outside the Lakeway Inn here last month after their 12-year-old son, drawn...

With the loss of his advantage at Culp's Hill, Lee decided to alter his strategy. Having already ordered his cavalry chief, "JEB" Stuart, to ride around the Union position and attack the Union supply line, Lee decided to strike what he thought to be a weakened Union center on Cemetery Ridge where he observed few troops and only a handful of batteries. If this section of Meade's line collapsed, it would threaten the Union rear and those strong hill positions. He issued orders for a massive bombardment aimed at this area followed by an assault of 18,000 men,

One thing that I like about Free Republic is the breadth of knowledge on a variety of subjects that Freepers have. After watching the movie Gods and Generals over the past few weeks, I have really grown to appreciate General Stonewall Jackson. My knowledge of him is limited, but I know that many Freepers know and understand the Civil War. So, while this is a slow news day (unless you are participating on the Tom vs Arnold threads), I was hoping that we could start a discussion on the contributions and meaning of Stonewall Jackson to the Southern Cause.

GETTYSBURG, Pennsylvania (Reuters) -- The National Park Service has embarked on an effort to change its interpretive materials at major Civil War battlefields to get rid of a Southern bias and emphasize the horrors of slavery.

The project seems particularly relevant following the furor over Republican Sen. Trent Lott's recent remarks seeming to endorse racial segregation, which forced many Americans to revisit one of the uglier chapters of the nation's history.
