For a single cell, the human body is a gargantuan maze of tissues, chemicals and capillaries, crammed full with trillions of other cells all bustling about like commuters at the world's busiest train station. In their new study, the researchers focused on a specific form of cell navigation called "self-generated" chemotaxis. It relies on a simple philosophy: cells want to move from areas of a lower concentration of attractant (in this case, an acidic solution called adenosine monophosphate) into areas with a higher concentration. To determine which branch holds the higher concentration of attractant, cells break down the molecules in...

An old stone quarry on the Greek island of Crete which has a network of underground tunnels could be the original site of the ancient Labyrinth, the maze that housed the Minotaur of Greek legend, scholars believe. An Anglo-Greek team believes that the site, near the town of Gortyn, has just as much claim to be the place of the Labyrinth as the Minoan palace at Knossos 20 miles away, which has been synonymous with the Minotaur myth since its excavation a century ago. The 600,000 people a year who visit the ruins at Knossos are told the site was...

RICHLAND, Mich. - It’s a corny tribute to the late Gerald Ford — and it can be fully appreciated only from the air. A farm not far from where Ford grew up created a maze in a cornfield in the likeness of the nation’s 38th president, who died last December. Each year, Gull Meadow Farms near Richland cuts a maze in its corn fields. A company that specializes in corn maze design drew up the plans for the Ford portrait, which says PRESIDENT FORD across the top and THANKS below.

A maze is designed to puzzle, but whoever dreamt up the intricate earth and grass labyrinth that is Julian's Bower can be especially pleased –it remains a mystery after hundreds of years. The medieval maze in Alkborough, near Scunthorpe, has been reopened to the public after a major returfing project, but experts are no closer to solving the riddle of why or when it was made. The 44ft relic cut into the landscape has many interlocking rings, and the theories surrounding its origins are just as complex. Some have observed how Alkborough's maze is strikingly similar to a floor design...

A QUARTER-century ago, Proposition 13 and a court decision to equalize funding among school districts transferred power to the state and eroded local control over school taxes.

Since then, legislators have turned education financing into a monument to the Winchester Mystery House. It's illogical and byzantine, with tiny pots of money in a thousand nooks and crannies. At least the Mystery House's foundation is stable. Education is built on the loose foundation of a cyclical economy.
