On a sweltering July afternoon in 1924, Eric Liddell walked onto the track in a Paris stadium carrying a trowel. Pinned to the front of his short-sleeved shirt was a piece of cloth bearing the number 451. When Liddell reached the track, he bent down and dug two small holes in the center of lane 6.Then he walked up to each of the other five competitors in the 400-meter dash final and shook their hands.Moments earlier, one of the British team’s masseurs had handed a note to the 22-year-old Scottish runner: “In the old book, it says, ‘He that honors...

On July 26, the 2024 summer Olympic Games will kick off in Paris, as they did 100 years ago in 1924. Back stories from those games were dramatized in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, about Scottish sprinter Eric Liddell, an outgoing Christian, and Jewish athlete Harold Abrahams, younger brother of Sidney Abrahams, who represented Britain at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. Sidney was duly knighted, and Sir Sidney Solomon Abrahams served as chief justice of Ceylon during the 1930s. “Solly” was also the first Jew elected president of the London Athletic Club, founded in 1863. Younger brother Harold, born...

And so into their fantasy world they go. Demolishing reliable coal-power stations and subsidizing intermittent sources of power. Bad enough that Western governments have swallowed the line that climate Armageddon is on the horizon. Worse, much worse, is what they’re doing about it. They seem unable to distinguish between dreams and reality. Two recent developments in Australia add to the overwhelming evidence that Western governments are living their deluisions. Of course, there are many more than two such developments. I’ve just picked two of them at random. The first concerns the Liddell coal power station in the Hunter region in...

Chuck Liddell, who is often credited (with fellow UFC fighter, Randy Couture) for bringing mixed martial arts into the mainstream, will be making a mainstream appearance of a different kind, on the upcoming ninth season of Dancing with the Stars. Liddell has an extensive background in Kempo and Koei-Kan Karate and is considered mostly a ‘stand up’ fighter (as opposed to a ‘ground’ fighter). It will no doubt be very interesting to see if a karate and kickboxing background translate into dance.

In a mixed martial arts event with plenty worth noting, UFC 97 will likely be remembered for Chuck Liddell's fourth loss in five fights and his apparent departure from the sport he helped build from the ground up. The 39-year-old Liddell said it was "probably safe to say" his career was over after he was knocked out by Mauricio Rua in the first round on Saturday night.
