ESPN will reportedly announce next week that it has hired Nate Silver to contribute to Keith Olbermann's new late-night talk show. The numbers-crunching baseball geek gained national fame when he correctly projected the outcomes of the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections. The New York Times, which reported the news on Friday, hired Silver, who brought his FiveThirtyEight franchise with him, in 2009.

Former MSNBC personality Keith Olbermann has been named chief news officer on Current-TV, the cable network started by Al Gore. Olbermann will host a nightly "news" and commentary show according to the network's websitewhere he "will lead" the programming slate. "Nothing is more vital to a free America than a free media, and nothing is more vital to my concept of a free media than news produced independently of corporate interference," said Olbermann in statement. After lingering on life support for months and fueled by promises that solvency was just around the corner, the Q Television Network officially ended transmission Thursday. Q Television CEO Lloyd Fan announced that funding would not come and that the network would be unable to meet its financial obligations and would commence bankruptcy proceedings. "When I took over control of the network on March 7, 2006, the company was roughly $7 million behind in payments to vendors; numerous lawsuits had been filed against the company and over $600,000 was owed to former employees," Fan said in a prepared statement Thursday....

Al Gore and lawsuit tycoon Joel Hyatt today launched their cable television network. And talk about outsourcing: Our friends in Canada - or, as Homer Simpson calls it, "America Junior" - are supplying the broadcast fodder. The former veep and Hyatt, who co-founded Hyatt Legal Services and who more recently was finance chairman for Democratic National Committee and bungled a campaign for the U.S. Senate in Ohio, bought Newsworld International (NWI) from Vivendi Universal Entertainment for an undisclosed amount.
