There’s a common quote, frequently attributed to G.K. Chesterton: “Don’t ever take a fence down until you know the reason why it was put up.” In our modern context, this should be rephrased a bit: “Don’t try to pull down a statue if you have no idea who or what the statue was really about.” During a 2016 Columbus Day protest conducted by Wunk Sheek, a Native American student organization, activists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus hosted a “die-in” at Bascom Hall, near a statue of President Abraham Lincoln.  According to The Daily Cardinal, a campus newspaper, the protest...

Madison — State Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Bradley was elected to a 10-year term Tuesday, overcoming a challenge from Appeals Judge JoAnne Kloppenburg and keeping the job Gov. Scott Walker appointed her to in the fall. Her win preserves conservatives' 5-2 control of the court. The Associated Press called the race for Bradley just before 11 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. - Donald Trump just walked into a political buzz saw in Wisconsin. The latest Marquette Law School poll, released Wednesday, just six days before the Badger State votes in the presidential primary election, shows Texas Sen. Ted Cruz with a 10 percent lead over the billionaire "anti-establishment" Trump. But what the numbers might underscore more than anything is most conservatives in Wisconsin like Gov. Scott Walker, and a sizable majority don’t care for Donald Trump. "Walker has an 80 percent approval level among GOP primary likely voters, with just 17 percent disapproving. That is strong support within the...

And now for the day that we've all been waiting for, it appears that JoAnne Kloppenburg finally got the memo that she was losing in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. She is expected to concede about this time today. Kloppenburg had called for a recount after the election results showed he 7,000 votes behind incumbent justice David Prosser. This is just under the maximum vote percentage to allow a state-funded recount. Kloppenburg's campaign expected to gain votes in one particular country that never materialized. Now Politico is reporting that Kloppenburg is going to leave the race, despite her earlier calls...

G.A.B. Certifies Supreme Court Recount Results May 23, 2011MADISON, WI – The Government Accountability Board today certified David T. Prosser Jr. as the winning candidate in the April 5, 2011 election for Supreme Court Justice, following a recount of ballots conducted by Boards of Canvassers in Wisconsin’s 72 counties.  The Board’s certification notes that Justice Prosser received a total of 752,694 votes and that JoAnne F. Kloppenburg received 745,690 votes, a difference of 7,004 votes, or 0.46%.  A total of 1,729 write-in votes were cast for other individuals. The initial official results submitted by the county canvassing boards after the Spring...

Waukesha County has filed its certified recount numbers with the Government Accountability Board, while Iowa County snuck in a revised set of certified numbers a bit before that point. With all 3,602 reporting units recounted, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting Justice David Prosser has beaten challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg by 7,006 votes, 310 votes less than the pre-recount 7,316-vote margin. The Associated Press (via WLUK-TV) has the totals as Proser 752,697, Kloppenburg 745,691. Final numbers from the GAB are not yet available, however; therefore, I don’t have an updated spreadsheet just yet. The Journal Sentinel further reports that, since the...

With the weeks-long recount complete, unofficial numbers confirm that state Supreme Court Justice David Prosser narrowly defeated Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg in the April 5 election, but the fight may now turn to court. Final recount numbers expected to filed later Friday showed Prosser with a 7,006-vote advantage over Kloppenburg. Kloppenburg will spend the coming days reviewing the findings of the recount to determine whether to sue over the results, said Kloppenburg campaign manager Melissa Mulliken. "I'm not going to speculate" on the likelihood of a lawsuit, Mulliken said. "We have to look at the record and analyze the...

As I type, Waukesha County is working on the process of certifying its results after finishing the physical recount about 2 pm yesterday. With unofficial numbers from all of Waukesha County except the city of Muskego, most of the city of Waukesha, and most of the village of Summit (the last was reported to the Government Accountability Board but was still under review as of this morning) available from the GAB as of this morning, and certified numbers from the other 71 counties, 3,545 of Wisconsin’s 3,602 reporting units have been reported and at minimum reviewed by the Government Accountability...

WAUKESHA - Officials in Waukesha say they expect to finish the recount in the Supreme Court race on Thursday. The state extended the original deadline until May 26th for Waukesha County to complete its count. Once the recount is completed, will challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg, who trailed incumbent David Prosser in the race by about 7,000 votes, challenge the results in court? She will have five days from the end of the certification process of Waukesha's count to make a decision on whether or not to appeal.

As our Supreme Court recount sloshes on, there is absolutely no chance that counting of the ballots will change the result. Moving forward seems to be more about exciting the base, sustaining anger and raising money. I understand how hard it must be to let go, but we passed the point of tolerance long ago. Even if Ms. Kloppenburg somehow feels obligated to move forward, she should cut out the empty insinuations. Of course, she may be contemplating asking a court to throw out thousands and thousands of votes in Waukesha County. I can't believe that she would have the...

The Journal Sentinel Editorial Board is entitled to its own opinions but it is not entitled to its own facts. The board's speculation about my motives regarding the recount of the vote in the Supreme Court election is inaccurate. I appreciate this opportunity to set the record straight. The recount process in Wisconsin is unfolding as prescribed by Wisconsin law. Votes are recounted in all 72 counties, and an official record is made of that process. When the Editorial Board says the recount is a "mere preamble to the court challenge," it is wrong on the facts and wrong to...

Wisconsin GAB Rebukes Kloppenburg Claims Of Fraud May 16, 2011 On Monday, the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board issued a stiff rebuke to the Kloppenburg campaign’s complaints and challenges to torn and stretched ballot bags in Waukesha County. In recent weeks, the Waukesha County recount of the April 5, election revealed a number of “ballot bag issues,” prompting conspiracy theorists to allege fraud and the Kloppenburg campaign to issue challenges based on “chain of custody.” The Kloppenburg campaign challenges attempted to have entire bags full of ballots thrown out based on a tear in the plastic bag. Bench Memos NROÂ’s home for judicial news and analysis. Give up and Go Away . . . Even MilwaukeeÂ’s Paper Agrees By Gary Marx May 12, 2011 The Wisconsin Supreme Court recount is about to wrap up, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editorial board has a special message for Kloppenburg: Give up and go away. So was it worth it? Probably not. As it appeared from the beginning, it appears even more so now that nothing will change in the election for state Supreme Court. . . . Kloppenburg had every right to request the recount, but given the cost...

Curious if they are going to continue, with the entire state minus Waukesha now recounted? Wonder what the reason for continuing is? The answers are "yes" they'll continue and an "unnamed Prosser volunteer" as the cause for continuing. Please read on: ----- Dear Friends, As of the end of the day tomorrow, Waukesha County is expected to be the only County that has not completed the recount. The recount has uncovered significant issues in ballot security, especially in Waukesha but elsewhere as well: bags of ballots unsealed, a pile of ballots in a clerk's office, ballot bag seal numbers that...

"Drum roll, please." Those were the words uttered as elections consultant Barb Hansen read aloud the vote tally for the final polling ward for the City of Brookfield. And with that, at 6:19 p.m., volunteer tabulators finished the meticulous three-day hand recount of the more than 14,000 votes cast by City of Brookfield voters for the state Supreme Court race on April 5. Its finish is just the beginning for the Waukesha County Board of Canvassers, who still have about 70% of the county's votes to recount, after 10 days of work including two consecutive Saturdays. That's in stark contrast...

The recount for the state Supreme Court race has come to this: Votes from nuns have been thrown out. Club for Growth has some ideas: Fed up with a smarmy campaign that won’t go away, many people with conservative inclinations may misperceive current efforts to put JoAnne Kloppenburg on the state Supreme Court. 1. Misperception: The recount proves they’re stupid. The Kloppenburg campaign might be called stupid if they expect victory in an honest recount. We don't believe that’s what they expect at all. Conspiracy theorists are in full force with a Democratic congresswoman even asking the United States Attorney General to investigate the Waukesha County election returns that gave the Supreme Court race to David Prosser, but they might want to call up Arianna Huffington first. That’s because Patch, a new media site in Brookfield that Huffington oversees, reported the Brookfield election returns to the public… on election night. And they were the same returns the city is reporting now that Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus has finally added Brookfield into the countywide returns. That means there’s no big conspiracy – Nickolaus just...
