The Roman Catholic bishops need more time. That is the recent word from Sen. Ben Nelson — news reports noted that before he introduces his amendment to restrict women’s access to coverage under health care reform, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops needs more time to review it. Why is it that the bishops are more concerned with restricting millions of American women from making health care decisions that are best for them and their families than they are with ensuring that millions of Americans — women, men, children, immigrants, the poor, the middle class — get much-needed health insurance?...

<p>An aide to former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend has been indicted on charges of diverting $6.3 million in federal crime-fighting funds to pay staffers working on Mrs. Townsend's 2002 gubernatorial campaign.</p> <p>Stephen P. Amos was the executive director of the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention (GOCCP) under Gov. Parris N. Glendening, a Democrat. He was charged Tuesday with using crime-fighting money to add 40 persons to his staff and to pay 10 of Mrs. Townsend's staffers, including her deputy chief of staff and several speech writers.</p>

<p>Over the past two years, the Maryland Democratic Party has managed to do what once seemed impossible: make the state Republican Party competitive for the first time in decades. Much of the credit goes to KKT — Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, whose poorly run gubernatorial campaign in 2002 made it possible for Robert Ehrlich to become the state's first Republican elected governor in 36 years. But the Democrats remain very much in control of the General Assembly, outnumbering Republicans 98-43 in the House of Delegates and 33-14 in the state Senate. Although the political environment has become somewhat more conservative in recent years, making Mr. Ehrlich's election possible, Democratic lawmakers are moving in the opposite direction.</p>

BALTIMORE - The city has fined 29 political candidates and organizations a total of $26,250 for the cost of removing campaign signs illegally placed in median strips. The biggest offender, according to city records released last week: Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend's campaign. Transportation workers had to pull 1,005 of the Democrat's signs. The city is charging $10 each, so her bill is $10,050. Her Republican opponent, Gov.-elect Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., racked up a fine of $1,580. WBAL just had live reports from Republican Bob Ehrlich and Demoncrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend's campaign "victory" parties. The Ehrlich crowd was upbeat and partying. The KKT crowd looked like they were at a wake. The KKT site reporter said she was told by a KKT staffer that they would be very surprised if things went well this evening. The Maryland attorney general is reviewing the Democratic Party's plan to hire more than 1,000 people as poll workers on Election Day and pay them up to $110 each, a get-out-the-vote strategy that Republicans decried as a flagrant violation of state law.

POLL NUMBERS TRENDING POSITIVE FOR EHRLICH, BUT... All recent polls seem to be trending towards an election victory for Republican Robert Ehrlich in the Maryland Governor's race. Today, NBC4 released a Mason-Dixon poll showing that Ehrlich leads Townsend 47% to 46%, with a margin of error of 4 points and with 7% of those polled still undecided. Carl Cameron was just discussing how Kathleen Kennedy Townsend convinced Gov. Glendening to impose a moratorium on executions pending a study by the U. of MD on whether the penalty is being applied disproportionately to minorities. Cameron speculated that this could become a major issue in the Governor's race since John Mohammed will likely be charged in Maryland with capital murder and he is black.

I am aghast at The Post's endorsement of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend [editorial, Oct. 20]. The Post says Ms. Townsend has a track record that suggests fidelity to certain core principles. But we don't know what her record is; she has yet to cast one vote for anything in her political career. State Democratic Party officials filed a formal complaint today asking the state to investigate the Republican lieutenant governor candidate for practicing law without a license in Maryland, an official said. The allegation involves an ongoing divorce battle in Montgomery County between GOP nominee Michael Steele's sister, Monica Turner Tyson of Bethesda, and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
