State Democratic Party officials filed a formal complaint today asking the state to investigate the Republican lieutenant governor candidate for practicing law without a license in Maryland, an official said.
The allegation involves an ongoing divorce battle in Montgomery County between GOP nominee Michael Steele's sister, Monica Turner Tyson of Bethesda, and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
Tyson attorneys have contested a July 18 financial settlement for $10 million signed by Tyson as invalid, in part because it was drafted by Steele, who isn't a licensed attorney in Maryland, according to a court motion.
"You're not allowed to break the law, whether you do it on behalf of your family or someone else," said Maryland Democratic Party spokesman David Paulson, who filed the complaint with the state Attorney Grievance Commission. "It appears that he has ... and we'd like to see that it's investigated."
Steele said today that his sister asked him to review changes she and Tyson had made to a document drafted by their lawyers.
"I did not give any legal advice to them," he said.
Steele graduated from Georgetown University's law school. He passed the Pennsylvania bar exam in 1992 and is licensed to practice law there.

It says "drafted". Was it approved by lawyers?

Typical democrats. They have no ideas of their own, so they have to use the old "ppolitics of personal destruction" since that's all they have.
I wish that black Democrats would open their eyes and see how they undermine a decent guy like Steele.
KKY is despicable and hypocritical - like all Democrats these days.

This is very thin beer indeed. Anyone can revise any draft done by a lawyer, including the client. Ludicrous really. But maybe it will generate some confusion, and deflect attention for awhile.

It sounds as if they must be pretty desperate to come up with this. The poll numbers must be going against them.

This is really desperate... I hope most MD voters will see through it. Hopefully it will backfire, but you never know.

"You're not allowed to break the law, whether you do it on behalf of your family or someone else," said Maryland Democratic Party spokesman David Paulson How brazen and hypocritical can these people get. Less than 24 hours after convincing a bunch of corrupt judges to break the law. I think they are going to be in for a huge shock on election day. Its the death of the Democratic party in N.J.

This is really desperate... I hope most MD voters will see through it. Hopefully it will backfire, but you never know. Problem is, they don't care about MOST Maryland voters, right now they only care about generating high turnouts in Baltimore City and PG/Montgomery Counties.
They are still waiting until the last minute to pull out the race card... and not even a black Lt. Gov. candidate will stop them from trying it... even though the Dems have NEVER had a black candidate of their own for any statewide position.

...Its the death of the Democratic party in N.J. We can only hope... but remember the old adage: "Never underestimate the power of stupid people voters in large numbers."
To: mr.sarcastic
"Never underestimate the power of stupid people voters in large numbers." ++++ See, with all due respect, why are the voters given short shrift in all this? I have waaaay more faith in the newly wizened American voters than your average political junkee.
First defense, when the Torch was put on the NJ ballot, everyone felt he was going to be a shoo in. Yet polls show he was sinking like a heavy rock in a calm lake. Those polls had to be legit, the Dems live and breathe this stuff. they knew Torch was a loser. so why did I hear it everywhere that the Torch was a walk? Even the Dems believed it or they wouldn't have risked putting him on the ballot. He sure got yanked soon enough when it looked like he was a loser. So who participated in these polls but NJ voters? The same NJ voters everyone was soooooo sure would elect Torch, no problem.
Tonight on Hardball, Matthews is yukking it up that the Dems pulled a fast one on the Repubs. AGAIN! Who the hell says Lautenberg is going to win? It's like, asssssssumed the voters once again have no brains.
As for Merryland voters, they're not buying KKT for one second. And this lawsuit is so much crapola. See, voters understand stuff better than we give them credit for. Voters understand that anyone having a brother what is a lawyer would most likely go to him for advice. Even a dumb Merryland voter gets this. This stupid stuff is NOT going to go over with the voters, those folks who carry this country on their backs.
I know being political junkees of sorts it's frustrating that so much corruption goes on under the unawares' radar. Surely the country yawned when Clinton danced all over truth, justice and the American way.
It's a different world now. Americans, yay even yer average Joes, are really paying attention. I'm betting a paycheck on it. And those voters are not going to be reduced to voting for smarmy felons like Torch or outright idiots like KKT.
Ya know......You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you can't, really you can't, fool all of the people all of the time. Allowing a forgiving substitution of "majority" for "all" in the above quote, I think the Dems time is up.

I checked with a MD attorney. What Steele has been accused of is explicitly allowed by MD Bar rules. Really nasty of the Dems to accuse him of doing something that is legal and ethical.

I wonder how many other cities local TV stations cover personal appearances by the President of the US! Probably ALL of them.
Party upset at Bush coverage
Ehrlich fund-raiser got undue attention, Democrats say
By David Folkenflik
Sun Television Writer
October 4, 2002
Democratic party officials are crying foul over extensive coverage given Wednesday by the region's three largest television stations to President Bush as he spoke at a fund-raiser for the state's Republican nominee for governor. Station officials stood by their decisions, saying that, in the midst of a national debate about a war with Iraq, it was important to provide full coverage of the president's remarks.
WBAL-TV broadcast the fund-raiser live from the Inner Harbor Hyatt Regency ballroom for more than a half-hour, displacing its regularly scheduled evening newscasts. WJZ and WMAR carried the fund-raiser from just after 5:30 p.m. to 6:17 p.m. (WNUV covered Bush's remarks during its standard 6:30 p.m. newscast, while a late-running baseball game preempted WBFF's news.)
Bush warmly endorsed Republican Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. during the event, which raised $1.8 million for Ehrlich's bid for governor. The president also addressed the state of the economy and his push for a mandate to use force against Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
"That was free, unchallenged propaganda," said David Paulson, spokesman for the Maryland Democratic Party, who registered complaints with officials at all three stations. "This guy came to town for a political, partisan fund-raising event - not for a policy event."
"A visit of the president of the United States to Baltimore is certainly worthy of prominent television coverage," said Peter Hamm, a spokesman for Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Ehrlich's Democratic opponent. "But there are limits. To go on for 30, 40, 45 minutes with continuing coverage is more than a little bit over the top."
News officials at all three stations said they had expected Bush's remarks, which lasted for 36 minutes, to be much shorter. But they largely defended their decisions, saying the heightened tensions over possible armed conflict in Iraq justified greater attention to the president's comments.
"With all of the world events going on - the war on terrorism, the debate in the Senate over the use of force in Iraq - we made the call to cover President Bush's speech," said Staci Feger-Childers, news director for WMAR. "It all of a sudden wasn't on the president's fund-raiser. It was about what he had to say."
Bush's appearance Wednesday night occurred during the station's evening newscasts, making it easy for the city's stations to decide to carry his remarks live. Last Thursday, by contrast, no major station broadcast live the NAACP debate between the two gubernatorial candidates.
Station executives privately said they were vexed that they had not been consulted more about the scheduling of the debate, which took place on one of the top-revenue nights for network television. That made it all but certain that the local affiliates would not air the event as it happened.
News editors said yesterday they had to weigh whether to treat Bush as the fund-raiser-in-chief or the commander-in-chief. "Sitting in this chair [Wednesday], it was a difficult decision-making process," said Margaret Cronan, news director at WBAL-TV. "I've never seen anything like it."
Over time, federal regulators have dropped requirements that broadcasters grant equal air time for candidates to rebut their opponents. But Townsend spokesman Hamm said the Democrat's campaign deserves significant attention devoted to comparable events on her behalf - such as the fund-raising visit in two weeks by former President Bill Clinton.
Officials at all three stations said they are delivering balanced coverage over time. Bush "certainly talked about much more than his endorsement of Congressman Ehrlich," said Gail Bending, news director of WJZ. Democratic party officials, she said, "must be frustrated, but that's their opinion. The president is the president."

Guys, So now, the Democrats would outlaw a qualified brother from helping his sister. I wonder if any money changed hands to make it a "legal" "lawyer" transaction? This is pathetic. Peace and love, George.
