  • Link between ACEi, ARB use and lower risk for kidney failure with replacement therapy

    07/12/2024 3:20:23 PM PDT · by ConservativeMind · 2 replies
Medical Xpress / HeathDay / Annals of Internal Medicine ^ | July 8, 2024 | Elana Gotkine / Elaine Ku et al
For individuals with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi) or angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB) treatment is associated with a reduced risk for kidney failure with replacement therapy (KFRT) but not death. Elaine Ku, M.D. and colleagues examined the association of ACEi or ARB treatment initiation with rates of KFRT and death using data from completed randomized controlled trials from 1946 through Dec 31, 2023. Data were included for 1,739 participants from 18 trials, and of these patients, 35.9 and 7.6 percent developed KFRT and died, respectively, during a median follow-up of 34 months. The researchers found that the...
  • Resistant starch could help combat leading cause of end-stage kidney failure

    04/14/2024 10:07:52 PM PDT · by ConservativeMind · 8 replies
Combining a low dose of blood pressure medication with a higher intake of dietary-resistant starch might help stave off diabetic kidney disease, according to results from a new animal study. "Our study suggests that combining dietary interventions with a low dose of established medications for diabetic kidney disease management can provide a more feasible and lower side-effect alternative for patients to implement and improve their health outcomes by helping maintain their kidney integrity," said Claudia Carrillo. Dietary-resistant starch is found in unripe bananas, cooked and cooled potatoes, legumes and whole grains. This type of carbohydrate ferments in the large intestine,...

The leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, is reported to be in critical condition, according to Ukrainian military intelligence. “The information is confirmed by various sources in the medical and political circles,” Andriy Yusov, a representative of Ukraine’s military intelligence branch, told Obozrevatel, which first reported the news. “There is information that the war criminal Kadyrov is in a serious condition and the diseases that were there have worsened and caused such a serious condition.” His ill-health is not due to an injury, Yusov added. “It is not about injuries. Other details...

When Nate Boutcher was 22, he found out his kidneys were failing. He wasn’t totally shocked by the doctor’s news, since his dad had suffered from kidney failure throughout Boutcher’s childhood, but the diagnosis still hit him hard. Like most undergrads, he thought he was invincible at the time. “I knew that I had scarring on my kidneys when I was 18, but I didn’t think it would get any worse. When I went in at age 22, I had some swelling, but I thought it was because I needed stronger medicine—but it turned out, I had severe kidney failure,”...

If you pee in the pool, it’ll go blue! There’s a special dye in there, designed to detect urine, and it’ll billow around you in a big, embarrassing, pissy cloud, and everyone will know you’ve done it, and you’ll be hounded out of town as a known pool-piddler. Everybody knows that, right? Except it isn’t true. It doesn’t even stand up to any scrutiny as an idea — what chemical specifically detects wee-wee? Would something that would react that dramatically to a dribble of micturition be safe to swim in? And if it happened, and someone was suddenly surrounded by...

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland says she had a second kidney transplant last year, replacing a kidney from her father with one from her brother. Hyland detailed her lifelong health struggles in an interview in Self magazine, and tweeted Monday that she hopes it "spreads awareness of organ donation" and "brings a sense of support" to the "beautiful warriors" in the chronically ill community. The 28-year old, who has appeared on the ABC sitcom Modern Family since she was 18, was born with kidney dysplasia, which causes cysts to grow on underdeveloped kidneys.

  • Mysterious illness kills thousands in Central America

A mysterious epidemic is devastating the Pacific coast of Central America, killing more than 24,000 people in El Salvador and Nicaragua since 2000 and striking thousands of others with chronic kidney disease at rates unseen virtually anywhere else. Scientists say they have received reports of the phenomenon as far north as southern Mexico and as far south as Panama. Jesus Ignacio Flores started working when he was 16, laboring long hours on construction sites and in the fields of his country's biggest sugar plantation. Three years ago his kidneys started to fail and flooded his body with toxins. He became...
  • High-fat, low-carb diet may reverse kidney failure: study (diabetes related)

    AFP ^ | April 20, 2011 | Unknown
WASHINGTON (AFP) – Kidney failure is a main complication of diabetes, but a lab study on mice showed that a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet could reverse that in eight weeks, US researchers said Wednesday. The extreme food plan is known as a ketogenic diet and is often used to treat children with drug-resistant epilepsy. It starves the body of carbs and sugars, thereby tricking the body into burning fat for fuel instead of glucose. The diet is so restrictive it must be devised with an expert's help. Meal options may include scrambled eggs with cream, a bacon and butter omelet, or...

'Kim Jong-il Suffering From Kidney Failure' By Lee Tae-hoon Staff Reporter Analysis of photographs of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il appears to support the growing speculation that he is suffering from kidney failure. Pictures of the 68-year-old Kim taken since April last year display common symptoms of renal disease ― abnormally white fingernails and dark hands, Yonhap News reported Tuesday. The color of his fingernails was light pink in pictures taken before he had a stroke in August 2008 and even in some pictures taken after his modest recovery in November the same year. In contrast, the signs of the...

TV Medical Reporter needs FReeper help. This is no drill. Five young children are in Orlando are in critical condition in local hospitals with highly unusual kidney failure. Some are on emergency dialysis and ventilators. They are very ill. Some may not make it. Doctors are not sure if the cause if the kidney failure is bacterially driven, but three have e-coli infections. The condition itself, hemolytic uermic syndrome, or “HUC,” often follows infection acquired from animal fecal matter. The only connection between the five, and another child who was treated for a milder case and released, is that they...
