Sad news today from the Satellite Of Love, as Mystery Science Theater 3000 has been canceled for the third time, this time by Netflix. The news came down today after several members of the cast revealed they had received word they would not be coming back for a third season on the streaming platform. The show had found a renewed audience after they Kickstarted themselves back to life with enough money to make a dozen episodes, with Netflix as their home to stream the content to the masses. No reason has been given by Netflix, as of the time of...
  • A new Kickstarter project will publish an undiscovered novel that inspired The Thing

    The Verge ^ | October 21, 2018 | Andrew Liptak
John Carpenter’s The Thing is a classic science fiction horror film that has scared audiences for decades. But the film was inspired by an earlier story published in the 1930s, “Who Goes There?” by noted editor John W. Campbell Jr., and it turns out that that there’s more to that story. A researcher recently discovered an unpublished, novel-length manuscript of the story, and a small press is using Kickstarter to publish it... Alec Nevala-Lee notes that Campbell was inspired in part by explorer Richard Byrd, and possibly H.P. Lovecraft’s classic horror story “At the Mountains of Madness.” In 1938, a...
  • Leaked NPR Emails: Call Kermit Gosnell a “Doctor” Not an “Abortion Doctor”

    Lifenews.com ^ | September 18, 2018 | Micaiah Bilger
NPR described Kermit Gosnell as an “abortion doctor” back in 2013 when a Philadelphia court convicted him of murdering babies. But last month, the taxpayer-funded radio group rejected an ad that used the exact same term to describe Gosnell, claiming it is not “value neutral,” according to The Daily Beast. The makers of the movie “Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer” have been hitting roadblocks since they began their project more than four years ago. Their struggles started when the crowdfunding site Kickstarter refused to allow filmmakers Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney to fundraiser there. They later broke...

Until the Super Soaker came along in 1990, water guns hadn’t changed much in over a century. But the Super Soaker was 28 years ago, and a group of German engineers and designers think it’s finally time for water guns to evolve again. They’ve created the self-filling Spyra One that fires quick bursts of water instead of a steady stream, which promises to improve accuracy and distance. The Super Soaker was a staple of my childhood, as it was for millions of other kids, but most of my summer afternoons were either spent refilling the blaster, or endlessly pumping air...

WWII patrol-torpedo (PT) boats were a perfect naval expression of the American Spirit at war. Today, just four of these combat-veteran PT boats still exist in the United States. PT-305 is the only one that is fully restored. Now, after a $3.3 million restoration effort and more than 100,000 hours of work by a dedicated corps of over 200 volunteers, PT-305 is ready to hit the water.
  • Have we finally gone too far on crowdfunding?

Earlier this month I was reading an article from Ester Bloom at The Atlantic dealing with the burgeoning trend of crowdfunding which raises some perplexing questions. She starts out by noting that there’s been something of a cultural shift in America on the subject of money. There was a time when asking for money was a rather uncomfortable subject and people generally only fell back on that approach as a last resort. It was not that long ago that people were squeamish about asking each other for money. Bringing up the subject of personal finances at all used to be...

In a not-too-distant future, you could be watching brand-new episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Joel Hodgson, the creator and original host of MST3K, has turned to Kickstarter to campaign for a new season of the cult-classic movie-riffing series. Returning to the line-up are the original bots, Tom Servo and Crow, to mock and joke through each unbearable film. The asking price? $2 million is the initial goal, which will allow the team to shoot three brand new episodes of MST3K. Each additional $1.1 million after that will allow them to shoot another three episodes, up to 12 episodes. The...

It was one of Kickstarter’s most successful campaigns. Its inventors sought $800,000 in funding from the public — but raised a gigantic $6.2 million. The project: the PonoPlayer, “a revolution in music listening.” It was designed to play back music files that use up to 20 times more data than the MP3 files that gave the first pocket music players a bad name. “Everyone who’s ever heard PonoMusic will tell you that the difference is surprising and dramatic,” Pono wrote on Kickstarter. “They tell us that not only do they hear the difference; they feel it in their body, in...

In August of 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait triggering a quick response from the United States. Ground troops and aircraft were rapidly deployed to protect the country of Saudi Arabia. The first boots on the ground were from the historic 82nd Airborne Division- America's Guard of Honor. Now, almost 25 years later there are very few accounts of what it was like for the soldiers on the ground. The photo book "Always Out Front: a Photo History of an Airborne Company" will tell the story of B Co 313th Military Intelligence Battalion in their own words and photos.

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)Dan Aykroyd, longtime paranormal and UFO enthusiast, has made an endorsement video for the Mutual UFO Network’s (MUFON) Kickstarter campaign. Aykroyd’s work in TV and film is legendary, and he is a major UFO buff. The extent of his interested was demonstrated in the 2012 documentary Dan Aykroyd Unplugged on UFOs. It is 2 hours of Aykroyd talking about UFOs, which may sound boring to some, but I loved it. His level of knowledge on the history of the phenomena is remarkable. He shows he is at par with some of the top researchers in the field. A video released...

BROOKLYN, NY, June 6, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- Two months after Kickstarter rejected two pro-life films because of its project standards, the nation's largest crowdsourcing website has streamlined those standards. In a June 3 blog post, Kickstarter announced that its approval process has been simplified, whittling a laundry list of rules "down to three basic principles." Additionally, rather than ask for approval, project organizations will have the option to simply click a "Launch Now" button that will allow projects to launch without approval from Kickstarter's editors. • Kermit Gosnell, the one serial killer Hollywood won’t touch

If what the media publishes daily is any indicator, Americans seem fascinated with killers. We’re confronted with headlines about the likes of Oscar Pistorius, Amanda Knox and Jodi Arias. When the news is slow, Americans can change the channel to procedurals, such as “Law and Order: SVU” and “Criminal Minds.” When the procedurals lag, producers and directors come up with serial-killer-glorifying programs like “Dexter,” which just finished its eighth season last year, or the 2007 mystery thriller, “Zodiac.” It’s strange to see Hollywood refuse to touch the story of the worst serial killer in America’s history — and to see...

In protest of the crowd-funding site’s “censorship” of his TV movie project about convicted abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell, McAleer commissioned a bold billboard near Kickstarter’s Brooklyn headquarters. Modal Trigger Photo: AP “Kicked out by Kickstarter,” reads the giant sign, which was put up on Tuesday afternoon. “Gosnell movie raises $1 million … and counting! To the public — we say ‘Thank you!’ To Kickstarter — we say … ‘You Stink at Censorship!’” McAleer raised funds for his last film, “FrackNation,” on Kickstarter, so the filmmaker didn’t think twice about turning to the site again for his latest project. But soon...

For the second time, producers of a planned pro-life film effort have had to switch from Kickstarter to IndieGoGo for their crowdfunding efforts. Filmmakers Phelim McAleer and Ann McIlhenny took their Gosnell Movie project to IndieGoGo after Kickstarter insisted that they could shut down the effort at any time if they didn’t like the language used to promote it, and another pro-life project called Stolen Moments has gotten a rejection letter from Kickstarter as well. Hackers breached Kickstarter's defenses and stole the information of an unspecified number of customers, the company disclosed today. The company learned of the breach on Wednesday from law enforcement officials, and quickly resolved the breach, Kickstarter said today. It did not disclose how the breach occurred. No credit card data was accessed, the popular crowdfunding site said, but hackers did gain access to usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and encrypted passwords. The company recommends that all users create new passwords for their accounts and any other accounts that use the same password.

We're raising funds to finish our film and release it in theaters by March 2013. Assaulted: Civil Rights Under Fire raised $71,140 here on Kickstart last fall - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/assaulted/assaulted. Since then we completed filming while the issue of guns in America has become the leading political debate due to the tragedy at Newtown. Assaulted - Civil Rights Under Fire When the subject of gun control laws are discussed, rarely are they associated with the civil rights movement and the quest for equal rights for all. This film will compare the historical aspects of gun control targeting the indigenous tribes of...
