Forecourt fuel prices will increase from midnight tonight — adding €1.28 and €1.48 to the cost of a 60-liter fill of petrol and auto diesel respectively. There will be a €7.50 increase on the current rate of carbon tax that is applied per tonne of carbon dioxide emissions by carbon fuels. This will bring the carbon tax rate up to €56.00 per tonne. The increase in carbon tax will subsequently be applied to all other carbon fuels, including solid fuels and home heating oil, but not until 1 May 2024. It will add 90 cents to the cost of a...

I’m hopeful someone can help with his Expert Opinion in this situation: heating oil was accidently added to kerosene in outside fuel tank... Details: Regular home-heating fuel used for 5 years: Kerosene About 70 gallons of kerosene was remaining in the tank before delivery (total tank capacity: 275 gallons). Accidently, during the delivery, 100 gallons of #2 heating oil was added, by mistake, to kerosene (four days ago) Present/current mix in the tank: about 70 gallons of kerosene and 100 gallons of #2 heating oil. Burner: “Thermo Pride” Heard that mix of heating fuels leads to fire hazards... so looked...

The typical rocket launch dumps the same amount of CO2 into the atmosphere as one airliner does in the course of a trans-Atlantic crossing If you’re worried about your ‘carbon footprint’ - a concept foisted on the world in 2004 by British Petroleum to persuade people that their own behaviour, and not giant oil companies like BP, is causing the climate problem -- then you definitely should not sign up for a sub-orbital space flight. Besides, you probably can’t afford it ($250,000 pp). Millions of people can afford it, however, and since the Branson/Bezos ‘space race’ last month tickets for...

US health officials have warned of the dangers posed by the latest deadly dare sweeping the internet: The Fire Challenge. Those taking part in the challenge douse themselves in flammable liquids and set fire to themselves, then extinguish the flames as quickly as they can, uploading the videos onto sites including YouTube and Facebook. Santa Clara county health officials in California have warned of the dangers posed by the game, and say that several taking part in it have suffered severe burns as a result. “A number of kids have suffered second- and third-degree burns across the country,” said Joy...

A Georgia Tech graduate student who set himself on fire while apparently experimenting with bomb-making elements in his apartment last month has died, officials confirmed Thursday. Saamer Akhshabi, an Iranian national, had burns on more than 90 percent of his body following the February 4 explosion in his apartment near the university, where Akhshabi was studying in the College of Computing. Law enforcement officials investigating the case found in Akhshabi's apartment an apparent Molotov Cocktail and multiple plastic bottles filled with gasoline and kerosene. Following the explosion, 26-year-old Akhshabi was taken in critical condition to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta,...

Qatar Airways completed the first commercial flight this week using fuel produced from natural gas, the company said. The flight used fuel from the Pearl GTL plant in Qatar, through a partnership between the airline and the plant, jointly owned by Qatar Petroleum and Shell. The fuel was made from a blend of gas-to-liquids kerosene and conventional oil-derived jet fuel. It powered an Airbus A340-600 on a flight from Doha to London, the companies said in a statement. Shell says its gas-to-liquids products have fewer emissions than conventional jet fuel and are more environmentally friendly. The gas-to-liquids kerosene can comprise...

The primary source of light for more than a billion people in developing nations is also churning out black carbon at levels previously overlooked in greenhouse gas estimates, according to a new study led by researchers at UC Berkeley and the University of Illinois. Results from field and lab tests found that 7 to 9 percent of the kerosene in wick lamps -- used for light in 250-300 million households without electricity -- is converted to black carbon when burned. In comparison, only half of 1 percent of the emissions from burning wood is converted to black carbon. Factoring in...

WASHINGTON -- A new federal study of chemical dispersants used to break up oil in the Gulf of Mexico shows that when mixed with oil, the dispersant is less toxic to aquatic life than oil alone. The study also show that when mixed with oil, the dispersant used in the Gulf, Corexit 9500A, is no more or less toxic than oil mixtures with other chemical dispersants approved for use in oil spills.

President Bush is one of the biggest gas guzzlers in the country and his first stop to sell the idea of breaking the nation's oil addiction burned up thousands of gallons of jet fuel and hundreds of gallons of gasoline. The White House, Air Force and Secret Service keep a tight hold on the President's travel and mileage, but government and industry figures show that the Air Force One 747 jet gets less than the equivalent of a mile per gallon. The President usually travels with a backup 747 as well as a huge C-17 aircraft packed with the presidential...

LA JUNTA, Colo. -- A man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for setting his father on fire two years ago as the two argued over whether kerosene was flammable. Authorities said Thomas Martinez doused his father with kerosene, set him ablaze with a cigarette lighter and said: "You are going to die today -- happy birthday, you are the candle." Ernest Montoya, 58, died several weeks after the 2003 incident during his birthday party. Martinez, 38, had been charged with first-degree murder and other charges. Sentencing was set for March 8, where he faces at least 16 years in...
