Dear Ex-Marine, It was wholly a pleasure to be told again that there is no such thing as an ex-Marine or former Marine -- because once a Marine, always a Marine. The same principle applies to judges, physicians and military officers. Semper Fi and all that -- always faithful. But what about those Marines who aren't always faithful? How else refer to, say, Lee Harvey Oswald except as a former Marine? What happens to those Marines who are court-martialed and dishonorably discharged? Surely they are ex-Marines -- and deserve to be. The phrase you object to appeared in an obituary...

John E. Holden had been a Marine Corsair fighter pilot during WWII. He survived the war, and the many years that followed, before passing away last week at the age of 93. Holden fell from a window at a retirement community in Lancaster, PA. The former fighter pilot described a life "filled with endless laughter and debauchery." He mentions receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal for actions in Okinawa in 1945, but also said there was...

DENNIS - Twice already in recent weeks Matt Emery has taken his friends to see ''Jarheads,'' the new movie about Gulf War-era Marines and the bonds they formed in battle. Veterans from the Vietnam era had their own movies, like ''Platoon,'' says Emery, a Marine from Dennis. This is the soundtrack for Iraq veterans. And sure enough, for Emery the movie brought back memories of the dust and dirt, loneliness and exhilaration, and, most of all, the precious letters from home.

Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx turns 38 on Dec. 13, and there is only one birthday present he wants from California Gov. (and fellow actor) Arnold Schwarzenegger: clemency for Stan "Tookie" Williams. Williams is an acclaimed author who has been mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. He's also a convicted murderer who is set to be executed on Foxx's birthday after 24 years on death row. "We can't let it happen," Foxx told me last night at the premiere of his new film, "Jarhead." "We've got to do everything we can to get the word out. Do you know...

Back on June 6th, we, the Freeple, helped propel OO-RAH Magazine, a site featuring the US Marines and their stories, a well-deserved 7.049 rating out of 10 on the coolness scale. To put that in perspective, only five sites got a 6 or higher rating in June, and only two of those five were in the sevens. Now we have an opportunity to vote for OO-Rah as Cool Site of the Month, so go forth and give 'em your vote! Please note you're also helping a fellow Freeper; outlawcam is the webmaster at OO-RAH.
