Live interviews are rare on Iranian state television, for obvious reasons. Going off-script means there's a chance to evade the censors, which give the audience only the version of the news that is approved by authorities. Yet, live interviews are, indeed, aired on some Iranian news channels, which can lead to problems, as an anchor with the News Network channel experienced recently while interviewing a Kabul-based analyst. "Lenziran" has posted a video of the interview (in Persian, above). Here is a quick translation of the exchange: The anchor asks the Afghan analyst in Kabul about the role of countries in...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has lifted a U.S. ban on a planned visit by a leading European Muslim critic of the Iraq war, in a move rights groups hailed as a victory for civil liberties. Clinton signed orders which ended the ban on Professor Tariq Ramadan of Oxford University, who was barred due to alleged terrorism ties which he denies, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said on Wednesday.

  • Al-Alam and Iran's Expanding Media Influence (don't underestimate Iran's influence)

Al-Alam and Iran's Expanding Media Influence April 17, 2007 Iran Analytical Report Iran’s assertiveness goes well beyond military posturing and defiance of the West. The Islamic Republic is trying to win Muslim hearts and minds through its well-financed, expanding array of media outlets targeting the Middle East, Caucasus, and Central Asia. Tehran is attempting to counter the ‘global media stranglehold’ of the West and present its own view of world events. To the detriment of others, this retaliation seems to be making an impact. Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting In the early 1990s, Ayatollah Khamenei decided that the West had...
  • Iran TV steps into post-war void

The postwar Iraqi souffle never rose. There were too many cooks and the recipe was a potpourri of bad planning, duck soup and pie in the sky. The first assistant chef to quit the Iraqi scullery was Timothy Carney, a former U.S. ambassador with decades of experience in post-conflict zones. He was also the first to blow the whistle on Operation Iraqi Freedom's "grievous" flaws, namely the fingers-all-thumbs blueprint for a country liberated from 35 years of brutal, bloody dictatorship.

  • 60 MIN II Special On Iranian TV

I just saw a 60 Min II special on a U.S. based Iranian TV Station based in California that is broadcasting into Iran. They helped organize the 9/11 U.S. support (candlelight vigil) two nights running in which the Iranians were beaten for their support. They make fun of the Mullahs and are also helping to organize and support the resistance in Iran, but they need our help. They get no government funding (go figure the one place it would be useful) and are a donation and subscription based group. So I plan to donate and hope you’ all will to.
