A U.S. District Court judge granted a preliminary injunction Thursday that halts the Protecting Georgia’s Children on Social Media Act of 2024. NetChoice, a trade organization representing apps like Facebook and Instagram, is challenging the law in a case in the U.S. Northern District of Georgia. It would have required submitting proof of age before accessing social media sites. Judge Amy Totenberg said in the 50-page ruling that the law is constitutionally infirm. "The State seeks to erect barriers to speech that cannot withstand the rigorous scrutiny that the Constitution requires, and the inapt tailoring of the law – which...

A century has passed since the Supreme Court clearly declared kids are “not creatures of the state.” 100 years ago today, the United States Supreme Court unanimously decided the case of Pierce v. Society of Sisters, a landmark blow in favor of parental rights. The Court’s bold words deserve to be recalled today: “The child is not the mere creature of the state; those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations” (268 US 535). Pierce arose because, amidst post-World War I anti-Catholic activism, Oregon...

On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) defended California law allowing teachers to not tell parents about students changing their gender identity by stating that under the prior law, “a teacher would be fired if a teacher did not report or snitch on a kid talking about their gender identity. I just think that was wrong. I think teachers should teach. I don’t think they should be required to turn in kids.” After Newsom criticized Democrats, host Bill Maher asked, “So, what do you say to people who say, well, this sounds all very good,...

When a Jewish boy turns 13, he heads to a temple for a deeply meaningful rite of passage, his bar mitzvah. When a Catholic girl reaches about the same age, she stands in front of the local bishop, who touches her forehead with holy oil as she is confirmed into a 2,000-year-old faith tradition. But missing altogether in each of those cases - and in countless others of equal religious importance - is any role at all for government. There is no baptism certificate issued by the local courthouse, and no federal tax benefits attached to the confessional booth,...

That privilege is only extended to individuals who allow themselves to be called "Party A" and "Party B" on marriage licenses. Throughout the next few weeks, I will examine the congressional records of Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter. Today, I start with the 104th Congress (1995-1996), Mr. Thompson’s first. These are the two men that conservative activists in the party tend to support. Both Hunter and Thompson supporters believe their candidate is the man to knock out the Rudy-Mitt-McCain axis of moderates, and ultimately, the socialist that the democrats nominate. A side by side comparison of the congressional records, during the years that Thompson served, will prove useful in determining what motivations and priorities each man embraced. Fred supporters claim their...

A new study finds overweight kids are stigmatized by other children at a very early age, and they may even face bias from their own caregivers. Rebecca Puhl, a clinical psychologist at the Center for Food Policy and Obesity says overweight children may become vulnerable targets of weight bias as early as age 3, "so it can be verbal teasing, it can be physical aggression and social rejection, and this is not something that is happening just from peers -it's also happening from parents and teachers." She says "kids who are overweight and who are teased or victimized because of...
