A study that looked into the age-stratified infection fatality rate (IFR) of COVID-19 among the non-elderly population has found that the rate was extremely low among young people. “The median IFR was 0.0003 percent at 0–19 years, 0.002 percent at 20–29 years, 0.011 percent at 30–39 years, 0.035 percent at 40–49 years, 0.123 percent at 50–59 years, and 0.506 percent at 60–69 years,” the study conducted across 29 countries stated. “At a global level, pre-vaccination IFR may have been as low as 0.03 percent and 0.07 percent for 0–59 and 0–69-year-old people, respectively.” The study aimed to accurately estimate the...
  • Covid’s IFR just keeps dropping

New study says the infection fatality ratio of the “deadly virus” has fallen from 3.4% to 0.15%…that’s plummeting 95% in less than a year With every new study, with every new paper, the “deadly” pandemic gets less and less, well, deadly. The most recent data review, published in late March, puts the infection fatality ratio (IFR) at 0.15%. That is, once again, pretty much the same as a normal flu season. The new paper is the work of Dr John Ioannidis, whom you likely remember. He is an eminent epidemiologist and statistician who publicly urged the need for “good data”...
  • Case Fatality Rate vs. Infection Fatality Rate In COVID-19: It Matters A Lot

As of this recording, there have been 4.2 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US, and 147,000 deaths, for a case-fatality rate of 3.5%. If you were to rank the countries of the world with respect to case fatality rate you’d find the US doing ok – about on par with Germany, and Brazil. Way better than Italy, and worse than New Zealand and Australia, for instance. This is not to say we are containing the virus well, just that among those who get it, the chance of survival is about as good here as those other countries. But...
  • Estimated Disease Burden of COVID-19 [CDC lowers estimated number of CV infections (91 to 83 mil.) based on dubious increasing

CDC estimates that from February–December 2020: These estimates suggest that during that period, there were approximately: 83.1 Million Estimated Total Infections 70.4 Million Estimated Symptomatic Illnesses 4.1 Million Estimated Hospitalizations Last Updated†: January 15, 2021 * Since the previous update, CDC has received additional data about the proportion of persons with symptomatic illness who seek medical attention or COVID-19 testing services, one of the sources of under-detection accounted for in these estimates. These updated data indicated higher levels of health-seeking behavior than data included in our previous estimates. The higher values of health-seeking behavior result in lower estimates of infections,...

An estimated 1.7 million New Yorkers have had COVID-19 — six times the official count, a study released Tuesday suggests. Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai also found the coronavirus was circulating through the five boroughs “long before” the first recorded case, the study published in Nature states. “We now know there were many asymptomatic and mild to moderate cases that likely went undetected,” Dr. Emilia Mia Sordillo, an attending physician in infectious diseases at the medical school and a senior author on the paper, said in a news release. Researchers found plasma containing COVID-19 antibodies...
  • We Need to Talk About Sellafield, and a Nuclear Solution That Ticks All Our Boxes

In his book Prescription for the Planet, the environmentalist Tom Blees explains the remarkable potential of integral fast reactors (IFRs). These are nuclear power stations which can run on what old plants have left behind. Conventional nuclear power uses just 0.6% of the energy contained in the uranium that fuels it. Integral fast reactors can use almost all the rest. There is already enough nuclear waste on earth to meet the world's energy needs for several hundred years, with scarcely any carbon emissions..... When the hot waste has been used up, the IFRs can be loaded with depleted uranium (U-238),...

The recent crash of the Cypriot airliner brings some points to mind. What if the pilots were dead and there was no one to fly the plane? The answer is using automated flying/landing using instrumentation. Everyone is familiar with the concept of the autopilot or may at least be familiar with it. Pilots might explain the difference between VFR and IFR flying -- in one case, the pilot relies on being able to see for flying, the other the pilot relies on instrumentation. Many airliners have incorporated features for landing using instruments only. It would be possible with technology to...

Hi, I'm 16 and a high school student. My friend and I started a website that tries to simulate a country. We have a working economy and a political system. Any real-life job can be held as long as you set up guidelines as to how it's run. For example, if you wanted to get into the construction industry, you would need to determine how much wood would be needed per square foot and so on. We're trying to make it as realistic as possible. So far, our efforts have caught the attention of some of the teachers at my...
