Explosion at Tokyo Spa Kills 3 Tuesday June 19, 11:54 am ET By Chisaki Watanabe, Associated Press Writer Apparent Gas Explosion at Tokyo Women's Spa Kills 3, Injures 3 Others TOKYO (AP) -- An explosion at a women's spa Tuesday killed three people and injured at least three others, officials said. Methane gas appeared to have seeped from the ground beneath the popular "Shiespa" hot spring and ignited, according to police. Authorities earlier said a boiler at the spa had exploded. "I heard a sudden huge boom. When I jumped outside, I saw a plume of smoke," said Miki Yamagishi,...

The only thing soaking in this "wild pool" located in Tecopa's backcountry is police tape. Inyo County and the Bureau of Land Management have closed the four-decade-old concrete spring; both agencies cited public health concerns as a rationale. TECOPA, Calif. - It's hard to imagine, driving through the tiny town of Tecopa, that the place could have a backcountry. It practically is backcountry. But way out behind the handful of local hot springs businesses dotting the main thoroughfare, down a rutted desert road, next to one lonely, listing palm tree, sits a little 4-feet by 5-feet concrete hot springs tub...

When I was discovering the "Earth from Above" pictures, I was bedeviled by the image below. I thought it was Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone NP, and it wasn't labeled. It took a bit of searching to find out where it was -- and I was surprised to also find out I'd never heard of it before. The image is of Pamukkale, a famous site in Turkey that features active, large travertine terraces. Apparently they aren't as hot as Mammoth, because people can clearly wade and immerse in them. Below are some additional images and links about Pamukkale. Pamukkale, a...

(CBS) For years, CBS News Correspondent Sandra Hughes reports, scientists have tried to understand the dynamic nature of Yellowstone National Park. "It's beautiful up here, everybody should see this at one time or another," says one appreciative observer. Scientist Lisa Morgan may have unlocked one piece in the puzzle, deep below the park's biggest lake. "It is kind of the last unmapped frontier in Yellowstone National Park," says Morgan. What she found looks more like the surface of the moon. Using sonar she's identified a massive bulging dome the size of seven football fields. The only other underwater dome in...

A disaster area sign hangs on a chain-link fence surrounding a hot spring Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, in Paso Robles, Calif. Affectionately known as 'The Hole From Hell,' the stinking, steaming, simmering cauldron wafts a rotten-egg fog through City Hall, across the town park, and past the downtown cafes, antique stores and farm suppliers. For many citizens in the Central Coast agricultural community, the prolific hot spring that bubbled up in City Hall's parking lot after a devastating earthquake holds great promise, despite its stomach churning sulpherous odor.
