The World Health Organization (WHO) is now demanding new core COVID-19 measures be implemented as cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) continue to rise globally. It was reported that there was a sharp rise in HMPV infections, with China and the UK overwhelmed with other nations grappling with its effects. The WHO is now calling for preventative actions similar to those of 2020. The WHO writes in a statement: “WHO recommends that individuals in areas where it is winter take normal precautions to prevent the spread and reduce risks posed by respiratory pathogens, especially to the most vulnerable.”

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus that lives in the respiratory tract. This virus was first discovered in 2001, and has since become one of the causes of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). HMPV is very similar to the RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) virus, which often infects children and can cause lung disease. ... the elderly, and those with lung or heart disease, are more susceptible to more serious infections.[...] The following are symptoms commonly experienced by HMPV sufferers: Dry or phlegmy cough Cough is the main symptom of HMPV, it can be a dry or phlegmy cough. A surge in cases of the flu-like human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China has raised fears of another Covid-style pandemic. [...] but health experts say HMPV is not like Covid, and point out it has been around for many years. They say China and other countries are simply experiencing the seasonal increase in HMPV typically seen in winter. First identified in the Netherlands in 2001, HMPV spreads through direct contact between people, or when someone touches a contaminated surface. The virus leads to a mild upper respiratory tract infection for most people. It is usually almost indistinguishable from flu. Symptoms for...
  • Human metapneumovirus, HMPV: Virus you've likely never heard of suddenly surges in Australia - with thousands feared to have it right now

A potentially deadly respiratory virus that few people even know exists is surging in Australia, with at least 1,168 people infected last week in NSW alone. Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) can cause upper and lower respiratory disease in all age groups, but it poses a greater danger to young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Though it usually causes a mild infection similar to the common cold - with nasal congestion, coughs, shortness of breath and a fever - complications can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia and can be fatal, especially among those who are immunocompromised, such as...
  • Virus you’ve never heard of infected record number of Americans this year — and it could explain why you kept testing negative for Covid and flu

A deadly virus that few people even know exists is causing misery across intensive care units and pediatric hospitals, doctors warn. High rates of Covid, flu and even RSV during winter led to hospitals overflowing during winter during a situation dubbed a 'tripledemic'. But cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which can cause bronchitis and pneumonia, shot up to record levels in spring, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s respiratory virus surveillance systems. It may partly explain why so many people tested negative for flu and Covid in recent months despite showing symptoms. Dr John Williams, a pediatrician...

New kids' respiratory virus June 3, 2003 Infectious disease researchers have isolated a new respiratory virus in children. But unlike the other respiratory virus making news - Sars, or severe acute respiratory syndrome - this virus appears to have been around for years. Dubbed human metapneumovirus (hMPV), the virus was first discovered two years ago in the Netherlands. Since then, it has been found in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and now, the United States. According to Dr Steven Korsman, a virologist from the University of Stellenbosch's Virology Department, no cases of this new virus have been documented in South...
