A new survey from Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy shows Democratic candidate Donna Shalala trailing in the race for Florida’s 27th Congressional District. That’s according to a report from POLITICO. The poll was conducted Oct. 1 to 6 among 625 likely voters on behalf of Telemundo 51. It showed 44 percent of voters behind Republican nominee Maria Elvira Salazar, while 42 percent supported Shalala. Mayra Joli, the Trump-supporting third-party candidate, polled at just 1 percent. The Democrat’s deficit was well within the poll’s margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Donna Shalala may be in trouble. Shalala, a Democrat running in a district that President Donald Trump lost by nearly 20 percentage points in 2016, is trailing Republican TV journalist Maria Elvira Salazar by 2 percentage points in a Mason Dixon-Telemundo 51 poll. The independent poll’s margin of error was 4 percentage points and included a pro-Trump non-party candidate who could siphon votes from Salazar. ... Shalala’s campaign noted that Trump’s approval ratings in the district in the poll are much higher than expected ... “It’s difficult for our campaign to accept that this is the only congressional district...

I truly believe that California is one of the most beautiful places that God ever created. Living here and simultaneously being involved in conservative politics certainly has its struggles – especially when you are a direct contradiction to the classic “rich, white male” Republican stereotype. Although conservatives often are subjected to a lot of criticism from the Left, sometimes it feels like us minority conservatives are scrutinized for our political opinions to a greater extent. I am a Latina conservative. Here are some of the struggles I’ve faced while living in one of the most Left-leaning states in the country.

The Fraternal Order of Police district that includes Broward County has dropped U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, from its endorsements. Instead, the big police union said it’s endorsing Carlos Reyes, one of three Republicans seeking his party’s nomination to challenge Wasserman Schultz in the Broward/Miami-Dade County 23rd Congressional District. ...the FOP district said it endorses “people who have supported or will support the FOP and its mission. Both parties have endorsements along with non-partisan” contests. Others use it as a different kind of guide, which one reader posted on the FOP’s Facebook page: “Pretty easy for me. Vote against...

RICHMOND, Va., March 23, 2018 /Christian Newswire/ -- Virginia Republicans have scheduled a "high-tech lynching" of a Hispanic-American for March 24, 2018, in Richmond, Virginia. The Republican Party of Virginia will be the first in U.S. history to try to expel a Hispanic. There are currently no elected Hispanic Republicans in Virginia. Virginia's establishment Republicans and commentators have attacked other Hispanic Republicans in the past. The Fairfax 9/12 Tea Party has promoted Hispanic conservatives since 2010. "Main point, they are lying," warned Jon Moseley of the Fairfax 9/12 Tea Party in Northern Virginia. Moseley adds: "Since Fredy never said what...

The Republican National Committee is stepping up its efforts to attract Hispanic voters. A new social media campaign called "GOP Hispanics: The Week Ahead" is directed toward the demographic and begins with an important message about national security. GOP Hispanics: The Week Ahead | Terrorism RNC Director of Hispanic Communications Helen Aguirre-Ferré spoke with Townhall about the new campaign and why Donald Trump should be a much more attractive candidate to Hispanics than Hillary Clinton. Clinton's supposed strength of being the "most qualified" candidate is actually her biggest weakness, the RNC director explained. "To the contrary," Aguirre-Ferré said. "She ignored...

The state with the smallest share of Latinos in the nation has elected its first Latino congressional representative, Alex Mooney. Mooney, a conservative Republican, ran against Nick Casey, a former chairman of the West Virginia Democratic Party. Mooney beat Casey with 46.7 to 44.2 percent of the vote, with 96 percent of precincts reporting. After his victory, Mooney tweeted: "I cannot thank you enough for this humbling opportunity to serve the people of West Virginia." Latinos make up just 1.2 percent – or slightly more than 22,268 – of the Eastern Panhandle state's population. Mooney, 43, ruffled feathers with his...

As national Republican leaders fret about their party’s showing among Hispanics in the Nov. 6 elections and consider the GOP’s future, they might want to check in with a couple of prominent New Mexico Republicans. Rep. Steve Pearce, who represents New Mexico’s border with Mexico, and Gov. Susana Martinez, who hails from the border-area town of Las Cruces, both have plenty to say about their party and Hispanic politics. In a telephone interview Monday, Martinez said Romney’s weak result among Hispanics, who chose Obama by a more than 3-1 ratio nationally, isn’t necessarily a harbinger of things to come for...

HOUSTON — Ted Cruz, an insurgent backed by the Tea Party, defeated the candidate favored by Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday in a runoff election for the Republican Senate nomination that revealed a wide rift in Texas between the party establishment and restless, anti-incumbent activists on the right. With the come-from-behind victory, he is heavily favored to win the Senate seat being vacated in November by Kay Bailey Hutchison and appears likely to become a star of the national conservative movement. Mr. Cruz, 41, is the latest conservative rebel to bring down an established party leader, tapping into simmering anger...

With former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's robust South Carolina primary win injecting a new uncertainty into the contest for the GOP presidential nomination, the campaign battleground now moves to Florida and Nevada - where Latinos, the nation's fastest-growing electorate, wield increasing clout. Even before his win, Gingrich's campaign was competing hard for Latino support against GOP front-runner Mitt Romney. The Gingrich team sent out Spanish-language e-mails to Cuban pro-democracy activists in Florida over the weekend and aired ads in Spanish attempting to define the former Massachusetts governor as anti-immigrant and too closely tied to Cuba's leaders, brothers Fidel and Raul...

Bias: A giant TV network has effectively admitted to blackmailing Florida's GOP Sen. Marco Rubio over his immigration stance. It's Exhibit A of the kind of sludge being hurled at Latino leaders who won't toe the open-borders line. Bigfoot Spanish-language television network Univision unwittingly revealed it's got a mafia-style hit-equivalent out there waiting for any conservative leader of Hispanic descent who won't tout their open-borders line on immigration. So much for reporting the news. Univision's top honchos behind this are all about politics — and are running their news organization like a cult mafia leader wielding power based on groupthink...

MIAMI — Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush told a Republican gathering Thursday evening that the time is now to connect better with Latino voters, not two months before the general election. Bush is co-chairing a conference Friday of the new Hispanic Action Network, part of the GOP's latest efforts to forge ties with the growing number of Latino voters. The conference will focus on trade, immigration, media outreach and education. "Typically what happens in politics is you're working hard and you say, 'Oh gosh, we better start working at campaigning in the Hispanic community,' and it's like Sept. 15," he...

A Republican group that includes former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on Thursday will kick off its efforts to improve the party's outreach to Hispanic voters, many of whom have been critical of some GOP candidates' harsh rhetoric on illegal immigration. The new Hispanic Action Network is part of a growing number of Republican organizations reaching out to Hispanics in advance of next year's presidential election — and it has powerful support. The group is backed by former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman, whose American Action Network funneled more than $30 million in campaign funds to Republicans in about 30 congressional races...

The Republican wave produced groundbreaking results for minority candidates, from Latina and Indian-American governors to a pair of black congressmen from the Deep South. In New Mexico, Susana Martinez was elected as the nation's first female Hispanic governor. Nikki Haley, whose parents were born in India, will be the first woman governor in South Carolina, and Brian Sandoval became Nevada's first Hispanic governor. Insurance company owner Tim Scott will be the first black Republican congressman from South Carolina since Reconstruction, after easily winning in his conservative district. Scott, a 45-year-old state representative, earned a primary victory over the son of...

After the 2006 midterm elections, many in the chattering class declared the GOP had been reduced to a “regional party” – white, male, and Southern. Since President Obama’s election in 2008, the Leftist mainstream media has worked diligently to paint much of the opposition to his policies as the bigoted and deranged spasms of a marginalized, racist conservative base. The tea party movement represented “racism, straight up” according to political philosopher Janeane Garofalo. Maureen Dowd, Frank Rich, Eugene Robinson, and Bob Herbert practically took turns writing weekly columns slandering conservatives using flagrant race baiting, including an embarrassing election-day screed from...

State Sen. Abel Maldonado, the moderate Santa Maria Republican running for lieutenant governor, opened his speech to party convention delegates Saturday afternoon by acknowledging the discomfort many of them have with him for supporting new taxes, among other votes he has taken. When he walked into the room, he said, a delegate greeted him by saying, "Hey Abel, I think you're with the wrong party." "And I looked at him, and I said, 'I'm not with the wrong party, I'm with the right party. Let me tell you why.' " Maldonado, who spoke after the room had somewhat emptied following...

A group of senior and up-and-coming Hispanic conservatives with close ties to leaders of the Republican Party will meet in the coming weeks to work out how to salvage the GOP’s electoral chances with a voting bloc that deserted them on Nov. 4. Like many Republican groups in the aftermath of a crushing election cycle, the Hispanic conservatives plan a political post-mortem to lay bare what the party did wrong and how to fix it.
