WASHINGTON, Aug. 5, 2005 – According to many servicemembers stationed overseas, it's a great feeling to receive a care package, and it's especially nice when the package contains items that you personally requested. Courtesy photo In March, Kristen Maddox, a 21-year-old college student from Santa Ana, Calif., launched the nonprofit organization "Helping Our Troops" with that in mind. SIERRA VISTA - In World War I, women made and rolled bandages for Americans wounded in combat. In World War II, women knitted socks, to keep GIs' feet clean and comfortable. Now, a group of Sierra Vista women are sewing neck coolers for soldiers in hot Iraq and will be taking on knitting caps to keep them warm when the weather in that nation turns cold. "Women are awesome when they decide to do something," June Kennedy said Monday. It was the second Monday that a few women gathered in her house. The sounds of a sewing machine stitching a...

Reporters Without Borders today condemned what it called "the criminal attitude" of Iran's top leaders in refusing to release journalist Akbar Ganji, who has now been on hunger-strike for nearly 50 days. "They must release him for humanitarian reasons. He has been unjustly detained for more than five years but he is a determined man," the worldwide press freedom organisation said, calling on the international community and journalists everywhere to join in exerting pressure on the Iranian government. Ganji will begin his 50th day without food on 31 July. He now weighs only 52 kg and is unconscious much of...

Sorry for the vanity, but I do respect the opinions of the posters on this board, who also possess a great wealth of information. With that said, I am in the process of buying a car, and wanted your advice. Here is the deal. I am a young attorney at a large corporate law firm. I have about $40,000 to spend. I need something that I can drive clients around in, yet hopefully is fun to drive, reliable, and that my estemeed colleagues will not view with disdain. I am not opposed to buying a used car, and would prefer...

Ok, so this isn't news and I hope the mods will tell me if this is a mis use of the service here.... but, Freepers are such a wide variety that I'm confident SOMEONE in here has likely performed their own mechanical work on a Mini Cooper and has knowledge stored in their brain that I could put to good use. I have an 02 MC which I believe lost the pressure plate in the clutch last week. I'm just getting into the parts removal and haven't pulled the transmission yet, but the symptoms are like there is no connection...

Hayden Bardorf and Kelsey Killeen, 9, and Megan Killeen, 7, opened a lemonade stand July 11 to help raise money through the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund for families of Marines and Sailors who were wounded during combat or training. “The children started the stand because they wanted to...

As many of you know, I have twin boys - they just turned 13 last week. They are good boys with good judgment. They know the ways of the outdoors, shoot and hunt safely, they have snowmobiling experience and they understand the meaning of family and God, etc. But, and I'm sure every parent knows what I mean, they are boys. Well, between my father and me, we own about 225 acres of timber in northern Wisconsin and the "Lando" boys love to visit the rustic cabin that we have on our property. Now they want an ATV - a...
