VANITY!!paid version of Webroot Spy Sweeper vs paid version of Spyware Doctor. HELP!!!
me | 07/30/05 | Me the Computer Illiterate

Posted on 07/30/2005 7:24:40 PM PDT by Sally'sConcerns

Here is what Spyware Doctor found after their "complete" scan. I don't know if there is a difference in a paid for scan or not. I do know I can't utilize their removal unless I purchase the program.

Scans (basic information only):

Scan Results: scan start: 7/30/2005 6:26:56 PM scan stop: 7/30/2005 6:41:27 PM scanned items: 42257 found items: 21 found and ignored: 0 tools used: General Scanner, Process Scanner, Hosts scanner, LSP Scanner, Registry Scanner, Cookie Scanner, Browser Defaults, Favorites and ZoneMap Scanner, ActiveX Scanner, Disk Scanner

Under Spy Doctor, I'd probably allow the cookie for WFAA since it's a news site out of Dallas.

To all that respond...please, oh, please, use layman's English since I'm a complete computer nerd.

Thanks!

I currently use Webroot SpySweeper which sweeps everynight (just to be on the safe side). Matter of fact, I was so pleased with Spysweeper, I extended my renewal last month. WebrootSpysweeper hasn't caught any of the above.

Webroot Spyware:

Spyware Fingerprints Loaded: 97,295 Memory Items Inspected: 1,305 Regostry Items Inspected: 65,946 Cookie Items Inspected: 332 files/folders inspected 23,706 Items Found 0 Traces Found 0

The only alerts I've received on Spy Sweeper were: Motive SmartBridge and SBC Self Support Tool. Inc, both of which are related to my change from CableModem to SBC DSL. These 2 alerts have been coming up since I made the switch to SBC.

On Spy Sweeper I have all shields checked except for the subset of Edit IE Hijack Shield Settings. The subset falls under IE Hijack Shield.

I've tried AdAware before but it freezes up on my machine so it's no help for me.

While my son visited me last weekend for my birthday, the only program he downloaded was GoogleEarth. All other programs that may have been downloaded were done before he gave me his spare (late July 2004) since the one I'd bought bit the dust in early July 2004.

Sigh, I don't like the fact there are still Comet Cursor spyware (high risk) as well as others that SpyDoctor concludes are medium risk.

Windows XP AVG virus program as well as SBC's efforts to curtail trojans, virii, spam, etc. No firewall

My question is: Should I cancel SpySweeper and go with Spy Doctor since they seem to be able to catch more bad guys?

Oh, I chose crime as one of my Topics because it's a crime to me there are those who are able to get away with the items listed as high on SpyDoctor.

The initial scan but with no fix on SpyDoctor is free. Both programs cost 29.95 a year with the renewal for Spy Sweeper's renewal costing 19.95

Y'know, I think (hopefully, at least) you were being humorous. I hope so at least. I do my dead level best to keep my computer protected from crap. And yep, I said crap. I don't open email attachments, I don't click on just any link even here on the forum, I don't go to sites I don't feel confident in and I'd love to know where you find that funny, especially at my expense.

I'm disabled in that I have extreme limited mobility (broke it in 1967, thankfully am not a quadriplegic) in being able to turn my neck. I also am recovering from my shoulder 'ball' being broken completely off of the long bone that goes down to my elbow.

You have more in common with the person who crashed the military funeral than you do a stand-up comic.

Continue to make fun, it says more about you than it does about anyone else.

Once you get your PC cleaned up, create a limited user that you can safely surf the net with. Spyware does not become a problem when it does not have permission to install.

Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Create Account > Limited.

Well, Sally, he IS bipolar.

Yes, it was a lame attempt at humor. I use the free virus programs (Ad-aware and Spybot and Spyblaster) I keep them updated. Every so often I do a full scan from trend-micro called housecall. There are also free firewalls to be had. ZoneAlarm is one of them. Keep doing what you are doing and you should be fine.

Please don't waste your money paying for either one of them there is so much good anti spyware stuff available for free.A combination of the following will do a fine job of keeping your computer spyware free;Spybot Search an Destroy,Spyware Blaster,Adaware, even Micrsofts anti spyware beta works great if you have XP and is free as well.Just do some google search's for the above mentioned, download, install and your in buisiness.Yahoo toolbar also has a spyware removal tool but so far it hasn't found anything the others didn't already catch. You can also clean your registry with CCleaner, also free, and it will help keep these things from comming back.

I'd say the problem is more that you're an incomplete computer nerd.

SpywareBlaster has pretty much made Spybot unnecessary (at least on mine; Spybot hasn't found anything on mine in weeks).

You might also give X-RayPC a shot - it works like HijackThis but in real time, no need to have someone look at it.

Good advice. As for Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, I've had it on my system for 3½ weeks and it has found no spyware in the 3 scans I've run. Same goes for the others. I guess SpywareBlaster and regular cookie tossing is doing the trick.

Spybot search and destroy, Adware 1.0 personal and SpySubtract Spy Trap. All are free I use them all and install Fire Fox 1.6 , it even kills pop ups on Drudge, the dirtiest site on the internet.

KimKomando.com is an excellent source of information, and they have different programs that are free or you can give donations to.

Mac wasn't included as one of the two options I listed in my original post. Being on a limited income, the majority of my limited income doesn't afford me the luxury of running down to the corner store to invest in a MAC.

That being said, can you answer my question about whether SpyDoctor should replace Webroot Spy Sweeper?

The free version of Spyware Doctor will remove what it found. At the bottom of the results page, there is a box that says "check all." After you click on it, click the button that says "fix checked" or something like that. I think the difference in the paid version is that it will alert you when you go to a site that will install spyware.
