Iran warned the US on Monday that any attempt to encroach on the Islamic Republic's ballistic missile program would constitute the crossing of a "red line." "The US calculations about the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation are fully incorrect," Iranian Deputy Chief of Staff Brig-Gen Maassoud Jazzayeri was quoted by the Fars News Agency as saying. "The White House should know that defense capacities and missile power, specially at the present juncture where plots and threats are galore, is among the Iranian nation's red lines and a backup for the country's national security and we don’t allow anyone to...

Sen. John F. Kerry claims he's yet to decide on a 2008 presidential run, but oddsmakers are already counting him out, predicting he'll come in dead last out of nine potential candidates for the Democratic nomination. The Bay State's junior senator, who missed becoming president by just one state, has been tabbed a 9-to-1 underdog by online casino SportsInteraction.com, behind favorite Hillary Clinton, and Kerry's vice-presidential running mate John Edwards. He also ranked behind Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and former South Dakota senator Tom Daschle.

WASHINGTON - Pessimistic, anxious and depressed people may have a higher risk of dementia, U.S. researchers reported Thursday. A study of a group of 3,500 people showed that those who scored high for pessimism on a standardized personality test had a 30 percent increased risk of developing dementia 30 to 40 years later. Those scoring very high on both anxiety and pessimism scales had a 40 percent higher risk, the study showed. “There appears to be a dose-response pattern, i.e., the higher the scores, the higher the risk of dementia,” Dr. Yonas Geda, a neuropsychiatrist at the Mayo Clinic in...

Election officials say most of the presidential election provisional ballots rejected so far in Ohio came from people who aren’t registered to vote. Most of Ohio’s 88 counties are continuing the process of verifying the 155,000 provisional ballots cast on Election Day and it looks as if most of those ballots will count. Nancy Moore is deputy director of Belmont County Board of Elections where about 40 percent of the provisional ballots have been rejected. She says the big factor is that board officials couldn’t find a valid registration, whether it was in Belmont County or some other county. In...

On the cover of The New Soldier by John Kerry and Vietnam Veterans Against The War, hippies clad in a mismatch of military uniforms are pictured mocking the legendary image of Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi in the 1945 battle for Iwo Jima. Today, the Iwo Jima image is a memorial statue that sits above Arlington National Cemetery and honors all Marines killed in action since 1775. It is one of the most recognized and visited sites in our Capitol City. The New Soldier never made it on the reading list at our military academies. In the...
