I have been bald for almost three years. Some people – primarily my brother – will tell you that I have actually been bald for much longer than that, but I like to count from the moment I realised it was pointless to pretend that I still had hair. The moment I stopped trying to keep it in place with chemical sprays. The moment I abandoned the comb-over. It has been almost three years since I bought an electric razor from Argos and buzzed the whole lot off.

A gel of tiny keratin spheres has been found to promote hair follicle growth. Given that our bodies naturally produce keratin, the research highlights the potential application of using keratin microspheres as a safe and effective hair-growth treatment. Keratin is added to shampoos and conditioners to strengthen and improve the appearance of hair. We also produce the protein, which does the same thing – it keeps hair, skin, and nails healthy and strong. Given their biocompatibility, keratin-based nanoparticles have been explored as carriers for anti-cancer, antimicrobial and wound-healing drugs. The skin’s top layer, or epidermis, is a barrier to penetration,...

There may be a potential role for nutritional supplements in the treatment of hair loss, according to a review published online. Lara Drake, from the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, and colleagues conducted a systematic review to examine and compile the findings of all dietary and nutritional interventions for treatment of hair loss in individuals without known baseline nutritional deficiency. Data were included from 30 articles: 17 randomized clinical trials (RCTs), 11 clinical studies (non-RCTs), and two case series studies. The researchers found a potential benefit of Viviscal, Nourkrin, Nutrafol, Lambdapil, Pantogar, capsaicin and isoflavone, omegas 3 and...

HAIR loss is a normal part of the ageing process with its cause to be down to a number of factors. However, men who are more prone to androgen alopecia could have an increased risk of COVID-19 severity says latest study.Findings presented at EADV’s Spring Symposium suggest that men with genetic characteristics that are sensitive to the male sex hormone androgen are more likely to experience severe COVID-19 disease. Researchers have discovered the novel biomarker to identify male COVID-19 patients most at risk for ICU admission. Due to the disproportionate number of men hospitalised with COVID-19, researchers were driven to...

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Johnson & Johnson with the claim that the company’s OGX hair care products cause significant hair loss. The products are sold at major national retailers, including Target, Ulta, CVS, Walmart, and Walgreens. Johnson & Johnson shampoos, conditioners, and some hair oils are among the products named in the lawsuit. The plaintiff, Larissa Whipple, an Illinois woman, cites the ingredient DMDM hydantoin as the main concern. DMDM hydantoin is a preservative and antimicrobial agent sometimes found in hair care products. It’s considered a “formaldehyde donor,” meaning it releases a small amount of formaldehyde over...

A leading scientist has warned of a new symptom that would show if you have already had coronavirus. Professor Tim Spector has said that people may notice changes to their fingernails after a Covid infection. Professor Spector, who is the principal investigator of the Zoe Covid Symptom Study app, said that the difference can happen even if you did not experience any other symptoms of Covid-19.

Researchers discovered that stem cells taken from fat tissues have growth hormones that can work on hair. They used those stem cells to create a new solution that triggers hair regrowth among people with male-pattern baldness. Androgenetic alopecia or also known as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness is caused by genetics, and hormonal and environmental factors. According to the researchers from Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital in South Korea, it affects about 50% of all men and a similar percentage among women over 50 years old. The researchers recruited 29 male and nine women patients or 38 people with common...

I’m almost 60 and have had a full head of obsidian hair all my life. It started thinning out about a year ago. I quit using shampoo about a month ago (just rinsing and scrubbing with hot water) and it has started to grow back in and thicken (caveman like, LOL). I know a lot of it is genetics, but makes me wonder if the chemicals in the modern shampoos and soaps are screwing us up genetically. Anyone had any similar experiences.

Pirates who hijacked an Iranian ship have become sick and some have died after coming into contact with the ships’ cargo. The 40 pirates hijacked the M.V. Deyanat in the Gulf of Aden. The Sunday Times reported that the pirates became ill, suffered apparent skin burns and lost hair. The Director of the East African Seafarer’s Assistance Programme, Andrew Mwangira, said We don’t know exactly how many, but the information that I am getting is that some of them had died. There is something very wrong about that ship. The ship, which is owned by the Islamic Republic of Iran...

Restoring hair loss is a task undertaken not only by beauty practitioners. Previous studies have identified signals from the skin that help prompt new phases of hair growth. However, how different types of cells that reside in the skin communicate to activate hair growth has continued to puzzle biologists. An exciting study publishing on December 23 in the open access journal PLOS Biology reveals a new way to spur hair growth. A group from the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) has discovered an unexpected connection—a link between the body's defense system and skin regeneration. It turns out that macrophages...

NEW YORK – Look around a crowd, and you'll see that lots of middle-aged men are losing their hair. As Baby Boomers, they have every right to demand, What is science doing about this? Quite a bit, it turns out. A British company, for example, says five guys are walking around with hundreds more hairs than they had before, thanks to an early test of what's been called hair cloning. An American outfit hopes to start testing a similar approach next year. Other scientists are tracking down genes that make some men susceptible to hair loss, and struggling to understand...

Dog spit and baldness: A hair-raising discovery BY DAVE BARRY Feb. 27, 2005 (This classic Dave Barry column was originally published on May 4, 1997.) Our topic today, on Breakthroughs in Medicine, is: New Hope From Dog Spit. I have here some very exciting scientific correspondence from William B. Yancey, M.D., who is a medical doctor and therefore legally allowed to (1) park anywhere; (2) give shots; (3) tell people to get naked; and (4) make scientific observations. Dr. Yancey wrote to me about an observation that he scientifically made regarding his Labrador retriever, who is named Refrigerator. Refrigerator recently...

ISLAMABAD, January 31 (Online): Hair loss is probably the one thing that causes men more anxiety than anything else in their life. Receding hairlines and the arrival of the bald patch are feared by men around the globe. Not even the efforts of superstars such as Bruce Willis and Andre Agassi to make baldness fashionable have succeeded in releasing men from this inherent terror. Hair may start to disappear from the temples and the crown of the head at any time. For some men this process starts as early as the later teenage years, for most it happens in the...
