Retailers are facing a tough equation as they head into the all-important holiday shopping season — this time over DEI initiatives.
Companies are bracing for blowback related to policies around diversity, equity and inclusion and are hoping to avoid alienating customers who may deem the brands too woke – or not woke enough. Some are tapping outside advisors for advice on how to avoid criticism, while others are opting out of public events on the topic as backlash against equity and inclusion programs grows in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.
CNBC spoke with a number of retail industry insiders, strategists and staffers who spoke on the condition of anonymity to do so candidly.
“There’s a clear sentiment in the retail community that nobody wants to get Tractor Supply’d,” said one retail industry insider, referring to that company’s decision to walk back a series of DEI initiatives after conservative activist Robby Starbuck criticized the policies online.
“Retailers left to their own devices would like to be very proactive on DEI,” said the person. “But now they don’t want any of their views to be public because they want to be able to sell stuff to everybody, and it’s become such a stupid political issue.”

Seems like HR departments could have easily avoided this possibility rather than jumping on the flavor of the day horse crap wokenista ideas.
How about just play to your brand and customer base. Really is not that hard.
So, people who aren't lock-step with the DEI/liberal agenda are stupid. Is that what they're implying?
“Retailers left to their own devices would like to be very proactive on DEI,”
Riiiiiiiiiight!
You’re suppose to kind of trust the TV ads but with the color change you can’t trust any of it now
DEI is an activist approach to appeasing the far left. Retailers are now upset that the center and right are voicing their displeasure at the retailers attempting to appease the far left.
They fooled around but don't want to find out.
DEI to me is code for ....bring in the Negros no matter what.
Holiday shopping? We refuse to buy anything in a store that caters to “Christmas shoppers” but avoids using the term “Christmas”.
Plenty of place to shop-—heck, gives us an excuse to avoid the commercialism of Christmas anyway-—
DEI will be used as the excuse to loot and pillage. (reparations!!!) The fact that folks have no money for Christmas presents because of ‘progressive’ policies will be ignored.
Well DJ...boo, those pesky UGA Leghumpers. I agree that most retailers should choose the best candidates. With a few exceptions...you know, companies started by rich housewives with their husband’s money to burn and other Yoga Mom’s to virtue signal to.
DEI walkback with respect to Tractor Supply don’t mean diddly to me. There are just some things there you either can’t easily get elsewhere or prices too good. (e.g., their propane refills are the cheapest in town).
Watched an NFL game yesterday. The corporations running the advertisements seem to have nearly completely removed white people from them. Seems DEI is alive and well in their marketing departments
Unless they need a thief or someone to play a fool, in which case they use a white guy.
The anti woke customer will be a bigger loss than you the pro woke customer. It isn’t even a matter of who has more money but who buys a product in the first place. Liberals love to see bud lite have a trans spokesman pretending to be a woman but they are drinking wine so woking is not a good marketing strategy. Liberals drink craft beers if they drink any beer at all.
Just treat everyone fairly and the same. DEI is just an abbreviation for special treatment for select groups. If you treat everyone the same, then I don’t see a problem.
DEI - affirmative action on steroid.
Why not just stop at ‘everybody’ in that statement? Isn’t that the point of retail, to sell to everyone. Stay out of politics. It’s a dirty business where you have to choose a side.
If all you had to judge by was corporate advertising, you’d conclude that 98% of Americans are BIPOC faggots, with a 75%/25% female/male split.
In other words a society that will become extinct in two or three generations.
We are the cats watching the woke corporate rats.
If they scurry out from their dark corners we will notice and tell the world.
DEI is non-Blacks bowing to Black savages...."See we like you, see...now don't burn down our businesses"
