Billionaire George Soros donated $1M to Stacey Abrams’ gubernatorial campaign just a few days after she qualified to run in March. He donated the funds through a super PAC. Soros made the donation through Democracy PAC II to One Georgia, Abrams’ leadership PAC… …There are limits to how much an individual or business can contribute to a candidate. Leadership PACs get around those limits. They can raise as much money as they can for a candidate. This year Soros is giving his super PAC, Democracy PAC II, $125M to sway elections across the country. He is contributing to both Democrat...

By Bruce DePuyt — When Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) announced a major plan to widen three Maryland roadways last year, even transportation insiders were caught off-guard. “I was surprised by it, but I rejoiced at it,” said John B. Townsend II, AAA mid-Atlantic’s manager of public and government affairs. “As much as people are loath to admit it, the congestion in Maryland has limited economic development in the state. And [it has] impacted the quality of life because of the amount of hours — more than 80 hours a year [on average] — we spend being stuck in...

At his inauguration as Maryland’s 62nd governor, Republican Larry Hogan promised to usher in an era of bipartisanship and cooperation in a state capital dominated by Democrats, even as he outlined an unabashedly conservative pro-business agenda. “We must get the state government off our backs and out of our pockets so that we can grow the private sector, put people back to work and turn our economy around,” Mr. Hogan said in a speech delivered on the steps of the State House. As he began his speech amid a flurry of snowfall that dusted the crowd, Mr. Hogan with a...

Del. Jolene Ivey After Del. Jolene Ivey told a Baltimore crowd she hopes to be Maryland's first African-American female lieutenant governor, she discussed what it means to be a fair-skinned black woman whose racial heritage is often questioned. Ivey, 51, is the daughter of a white woman who was raised by her black father and stepmother. She said her racial heritage was the "No.1 issue" when she launched her first political campaign in 2006 — repeatedly being asked by voters to "clarify" her racial identity. "As much as I'd like to believe that we're in a post-racial country, we're not,"...

A political tail wind boosting their prospects, Republicans have significant opportunities to gain governorships across the Great Lakes and Midwest this fall. But, in a wrinkle to their coast-to-coast victory plan, the GOP is struggling with internal fights in a handful of primaries, giving Democrats hope of snatching a few big states. The outcome of a whopping 37 races will determine control of several heavily populated states ahead of the every-decade redrawing of congressional and legislative boundaries. The census decides who will have the advantage in the quest for control of statehouses and Congress over the next 10 years.

California Republicans, already looking ahead from the first 2008 presidential election votes, are starting to float a new name for the 2010 gubernatorial race -- Rep. Duncan Hunter. The Southern California Congressman has barely surfaced in the polls as a 2008 GOP presidential candidate, but his get-tough stance on immigration and border security -- he takes credit for the legislation and construction of the U.S.-Mexico border fence -- makes him popular among the party's hardline conservatives here. And those conservatives are casting about for an alternative to wealthy and moderate GOPer Steve Poizner, the state insurance commissioner, who is widely...

Out in Texas, Libertarian gubernatorial candidate James Werner is having trouble getting into a televised debate A href="http://www.dailytexanonline.com/media/storage/paper410/news/2006/08/02/TopStories/Libertarian.Candidate.Wants.In.On.Debate-2142979.shtml?norewrite200608060649&sourcedomain=www.dailytexanonline.com">(The Daily Texan): Libertarian gubernatorial candidate James Werner is asking public broadcaster KERA to include him in the gubernatorial debate in October. The Texas Debates, coordinated by KERA-North Texas, Univision and The Dallas Morning News, excluded Werner because he didn't meet the established debate criteria as a major candidate. Public broadcaster KERA came up with some excuses for not including Werner in the debate, saying it wasn't because of his party affiliation, but his lack of "newsworthiness": "It really has to do with...

An election for every American -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted: October 14, 2005 1:00 a.m. Eastern © 2005 WorldNetDaily.com Just because there is no 2008 presidential candidate you're excited about, doesn't mean you can't be involved in politics. Just because there is no congressional candidate you can support in 2006, doesn't mean you can't be involved in politics. Just because there are so few righteous men and women running for office in America today, doesn't mean you are supposed to sit at home and drop out. In fact, it's more important than ever that Americans who revere the Constitution and who understand the...

WENATCHEE, Wash. - The legal challenge to the governor's election will go to trial May 23, a judge decided Tuesday. Chelan County Superior Court Judge John Bridges said the trial shouldn't take more than two weeks. Whatever he decides, the case will ultimately be appealed to the state Supreme Court. Republicans are challenging the election of Democratic Gov. Christine Gregoire, who won by just 129 votes in a hand recount of 2.9 million ballots. Republican Dino Rossi won the first two counts. It could take months to settle the election challenge. Republicans are optimistic the Supreme Court will render a...

<p>Arnold Schwarzenegger took over California's governorship last week with an aggressive gusto that was -- largely by design -- very reminiscent of his title character in the "Terminator" movies.</p>
<p>"It's true that things may get harder before they get better," Schwarzenegger told Californians during his inaugural address. "But I've never been afraid of the struggle, I've never been afraid of the fight, and I've never been afraid of the hard work."</p>

State GOP pays tribute to former Gov. Clements Associated Press AUSTIN (AP) - Texas Republicans on Friday paid tribute to Bill Clements on the 25th anniversary of his first election to the governor's office, crediting him with being the catalyst for the party's rise to statewide dominance. Clements, 86, broke a centurylong Democratic hold on the Governor's Mansion when he was elected in 1978. He lost a re-election bid to Democrat Mark White in 1982 but came back to win the office again in 1986. His two full four-year terms make him the longest-serving governor in Texas history. "Governor Clements...

Forget the conventional wisdom of the chattering classes! During the run-up to Arnold Schwarzenegger's bombshell announcement, political pundits of all stripes continued to echo the nonsense that Auh-nuld had decided against a run for the governorship in California's upcoming recall election, and would instead opt to support Richard Riordan for the political hotspot. But Mr. Schwarzenegger fooled them all! The political landscape was turned topsy-turvy as the superstar declared his gubernatorial bid on the Tonight show. And, in fact, it's former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan who is supporting Arnold Schwarzenegger's candidacy, not the other way around. Auh-nuld smartly decided...

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman's call for a statewide recount suffered a blow Friday when the Republican attorney general said sealed ballots can't be opened just because the governor trails his GOP challenger. The opinion of Attorney General Bill Pryor came as Alabama's 67 counties certified their votes, with official results showing Siegelman trailing GOP Rep. Bob Riley (news, bio, voting record) by 3,117 votes. In some counties there was a change from the unofficial numbers reported Tuesday night, but not enough to change the outcome. "You can't break the seal based on not liking the count,"...

Are there new numbers on the Maryland gubernatorial race? Major Garrett mentioned Florida and Maryland in the same segment speaking of Democrats virtually assured of coming up short in targeted races. He sounded definitive, saying that, I quote, "It does not, I repeat NOT, look like (a Townsend win)is going to happen," because Ehrlich is leading. Has Ehrlich grown his lead beyong the MOE?
-
Pardon the vanity, folks, but the race I'm following the closest is the Maryland Governor's race (I don't live there, I just like Ehrlich and loathe Townsend!) Here's the math. The latest poll, Mason Dixon, has an Ehrlich lead of 47-46%. The internals have the demographic breakdown: White voters Ehrlich, 58 percent Townsend, 34 percent African-American voters Townsend, 86 percent Ehrlich, 9 percent Now assuming turnout is a repeat of 2000: 73% white 22% African American 5% Hispanic/Asian/Others Let's further assume the 8% of undecided whites split evenly, with the two picking up 4 points apiece: Ehrlich carries whites 62-38%....
-
My heart sank when I saw this one, but one word of caution: my guess is this poll is an outlier because 1) I've never heard of this polling unit, and 2)it has a very high margin of error at 6%. Maybe I'm engaging in wishful thinking but I just don't see any fundamental weakness on Jeb's part, only ultra high intensity among partisan Democrats. If this race is won, it will be on turnout, not anti-Bush sentiment.
