For many bands, they can labour away for years developing and reshaping their sound to reach what they deem artistic perfection – most never reach this eutopia. This, however, was never a worry for post-punk’s artful vampires, Bauhaus. With their cavernous, magical debut single, ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’, they knew they had hit the nail on the head; everything after was a bonus. In 1978, Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, Kevin Haskins and David J formed Bauhaus with the aim of bringing a sinister and more artistic edge to punk. They would employ the vibrations of glam, psychedelia, dub and prog-rock to...

Mainly due to their aesthetic, The Cure have been labelled as goth throughout their career. However, frontman Robert Smith believes it’s an inaccurate judgement of the group and one that’s based entirely on their look rather than their sound. The goth movement began making waves in the early 1980s, and before that moment, no name was attached to people who looked like Smith. The Cure had existed for several years before the subculture truly got underway, and Smith is seen as the forefather to the scene. However, the frontman believes his association with goth culture has been exaggerated beyond reality....

In yet another tragic mass shooting, Salvador Ramos, 18, slaughtered 19 innocent children and two much-loved teachers at Robb Elementary school, in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday before being killed in a shoot out with a Border Patrol officer and local law enforcement. It is the second deadliest shooting in US history after the infamous Sandy Hook massacre in 2012 - which saw 26 people killed - and has once again left people asking how someone could commit such a heinous crime. As the country tries to make sense of the tragedy, stories about Ramos are beginning to emerge from those...

Bats have often been the subject of disdain, especially now that they may be somewhat responsible for the COVID-19 issue. It seems as if they may finally be catching a break, thanks to a viral video on Reddit. It shows them upside down, and they look like they are ready for a party. The video was taken by Das Kraftfuttermischwerk of some bats gyrating to music on a lighted floor. The sway of the bats appears to mimic the dance moves you might see at a goth club. Of course, it isn’t all cutesy, especially when you look closer and...

A Minnesota woman who was told not to come to her ex-boyfriend’s funeral was charged Monday after witnesses said she drove through the cemetery and tried to run over mourners during the ceremony. Blair Whitten, 28, was charged with reckless endangerment following the incident at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo, North Dakota, on Saturday, police said. "Multiple complainants reported Whitten was driving her vehicle, inside the cemetery, in a manner with extreme indifference for human life which created substantial risk of serious bodily injury to persons in the cemetery," Fargo police spokeswoman Jessica Schindeldecker told local station KVRR. No one was...

A late Roman period body unearthed in Gloucester has stunned experts after tests suggested it was a Goth warrior from eastern Europe. The man, aged 25 to 30, who was dug up north of Kingsholm Square in 1972, had always baffled archaeologists. His elaborate silver belt fittings, shoe buckles and inlaid knife were believed to be from an area between the Balkans and Southern Russia. Chemical tests now prove he was from east of the River Danube. This has led historians to suggest he was a Goth mercenary in the Roman Army. Pirate warden? The large bones date to about...

The picture (see here), taken at a reception given by President Obama for world leaders attending the UN General Assembly, caused a huge stir because no one in Spain has ever seen Prime Minister Zapatero’s goth daughters before. Not that there’s anything wrong with being a Goth. Really, there isn’t. But Zapatero prevents the Spanish media from running any photographs of his kids to protect their privacy. His office called the White House to remove the image from the US State Department’s Flickr page and the West Wing withdrew it. But it was too late! Many in-boxes were swamped with...

The teenage daughters of Spain’s prime minister were ridiculed for dressing “Goth” with the Obamas. Meghan McCain on the perils of being a politician’s kid. Over the weekend I was emailed and tweeted an image of the prime minister of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and his family standing with President and Michelle Obama at the United Nations. The photo was uploaded onto the White House Flickr account but soon taken down because apparently the young girls are not seen or photographed in their country, so as to protect their privacy. When I first saw the picture, I didn’t understand...

Last week Barack and Michelle Obama hosted a reception for visiting foreign dignitaries at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Over the course of the evening, the president, whose "amazingly consistent" smile created a viral video, and first lady posed for over 130 photographs with their guests, all of which were later posted to the State Department's Flickr page. This caused a problem: Included was a shot of the Obamas posing with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, his wife Sonsoles Espinosa, and two daughters, Laura, 16, and Alba, 13, who've never had photographs of themselves published previously...

WILKES-BARRE – Attorneys for a woman accused of piercing the bodies of three stray kittens have asked a judge to dismiss the case, saying that charges of cruelty to animals and criminal conspiracy are “unconstitutionally vague.” Lawyers for Holly Crawford, 34, of Dobson Road, Ross Township, filed court papers Tuesday asking for the dismissal, stating prosecutors “failed to provide reasonable notice of the conduct” that Crawford is charged with. Three counts each of cruelty to animals and criminal conspiracy were filed after humane officers and state police searched Crawford’s home on Dec. 17 and seized three kittens with ear, neck...

The 18-year-old lead singer of Soul Cry, an Italian gothic metal band, and her 16-year-old brother, the band’s bass player, were arrested and charged with premeditated attempted murder after they were said to have stabbed the band’s teenage guitarist for playing poorly in rehearsal, The Associated Press reported. “The motive — absurd as that is — is apparently that the way my client played his instrument did not satisfy the two,” said Giuseppe Maria Muscolo, a lawyer for the guitar player...

ROSS TWP. – Three kittens with ear, neck and tail piercings were removed from a home by humane officers on Wednesday. One of the officers from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Luzerne County said the pierced kittens were being sold as “gothic kittens” on an Internet auction site. “This is a first,” said Officer Carol Morrison. “It’s unbelievable anybody would do this to kittens.” Morrison said the investigation began about a week ago when a man from another state noticed “gothic kittens” being sold on eBay. The kittens were also being sold on a pet...

Senior Clay Edwards’ photo won’t be in this year’s Bracken County High School yearbook. He’ll be listed as “not pictured.” For Edwards it wasn’t missing picture day or a case of the flu that kept him out of his last yearbook and the class of 2009 composite – it was a dog collar and makeup......

Could we ever imagine that designers would receive their inspiration for their spring collections from scary skeletons? Human bones and musculature were a main theme on Rodarte’s airy frocks, Christian Lacroix’s necklaces and Ohne Titel’s clothing. Christian Lacroix, Rodarte

2 teenage boys and a girl, all friends of the 19 year old daughter of the scientist, have been arrested in connection with the stabbing death. While the police have not said anything officially, a reporter for one station said the death was possibly related to "cult-like activity" and the reporter for a different station said the three suspects were involved in some sort of Goth group with the victim's daughter.

-snip- "Sin stands for beauty, sin stands for life. Sexual sin is every man's right!! He will exalt the wicked of man: our king the Antichrist!" Self-described Satanist Lord Ahriman, lead singer for the Swedish black-metal band Dark Funeral, is scream-growling at an internal-organ-rattling volume inside Jaxx's concert hall. Thrilled fans, many of them teenagers clad in black, shoot Devil-horn hand signs into the air. A horned, fang-toothed man-beast roars from a massive banner across the stage. Most common T-shirt of the night: "The day you die is the day I smile." Most common adjective: brutal (in a good way)....

A goth who leads his girlfriend around with a dog lead and collar was stopped from getting on a bus amid fears for passenger safety, a bus firm confirmed. Dani Graves, 25, and his fiancee Tasha Maltby, 19, of Dewsbury, West Yorks, claim they have been discriminated against by bus firm Arriva Yorkshire. The black-clad couple said they had been told to leave one bus and prevented from boarding another. The bus firm said safety came first, but it was investigating the complaint. Bus operator Arriva claimed other passengers could be put at risk if the bus braked sharply. Operations...

Given that she describes herself as a human pet – and is happy to walk around on a lead – Tasha Maltby is used to odd looks and even odder remarks. But nothing had prepared her for the reaction of the bus driver who allegedly told the self-styled Goth and her boyfriend: "We don't let freaks and dogs like you on." Miss Maltby and her fiance Dani Graves were so angered they have complained to the bus company of being "victimised". "It is definitely discrimination, almost like a hate crime," 19-year-old Miss Maltby said yesterday. The music technology student had...
