Mark Hamill says the force is with Rep. Adam Schiff, with the “Star Wars” actor making a fundraising pitch for the California Democrat’s Senate bid. “Over the last six years, our democracy has been tested like never before. And in those dark times, Adam gave me hope,” a Monday email from Schiff’s Senate campaign and signed by Hamill said. “Hope that our democracy would survive. Hope that not only would we get through this, but that we would come out on the other side and our democracy could be strong again,” said the actor.

Democratic convention planners and fundraisers are looking to make up for some lost time in Denver, now that Barack Obama has finally claimed the party’s presidential nomination. The Denver host committee needs to raise $40.6 million by June 16 but so far has collected only about $25 million. By contrast, Republicans are already on target to raise $39 million for their convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul. “Key supporters have continued to support their candidates and not the convention at this point,” said Steven W. WASHINGTON - Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson has brought in more than 11 and a-half million dollars over four months. The numbers are the first to be reported since he formally entered the race last month. Two Republicans familiar with the fundraising by the actor and former senator say the amount includes more than three million dollars raised in June, before the third-quarter fundraising period began. The two Republicans also say checks are still being counted from more than 70,000 contributors.

WASHINGTON - The Democratic National Committee has raised more than $28 million through the first half of 2005, boosted by online donations, the party said Monday. Online donations have brought in five times as much money as the party raised online in 2003 — the last time the party was raising money in a non-election year. Under new chairman Howard Dean, the Democrats have raised more than $1 million a week from about 600,000 donations.
