Mark Foley had been a gay Boy Scout troop leader, there is no doubt that those condemning the GOP would have condemned the Boy Scouts for dismissing him. When the Boy Scouts attempted to do what some accuse the Republicans of failing to do - separating potential predators from potential prey - they were accused of bigotry and gay-bashing.
