Just as retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens is publicly declaring that the U.S. Constitution needs to be changed to restrict gun ownership to make it consistent with the wishes of the Founding Fathers, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is putting the National Rifle Association on notice that he intends to dig into his deep pockets and spend upwards of $50 million to influence local and state politicians to support gun control. Stevens gave an interview to ABC News to coincide with the publication of his new book, “Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change...

A new Westmoreland grocery isn't even open yet and already its owner has created a controversy with statements she made online. But the owner told KGW Thursday she wants to make amends. In about one week Chauncy Childs plans to open her natural grocer on Southeast Milwaukie Avenue. But after a series of postings she made on her Facebook page, she now finds herself at the often dangerous intersection where social media and gay rights meet. The Moreland Farmer's Pantry will offer fresh produce, raw milk and foods that are free of genetic engineering. Westmoreland resident Sean O’Riordan was looking forward to the...

Calls on citizens to stop 'example of state socialism' A famous U.S. televangelist is urging Americans to take an example from Egyptians who ousted former President Mohamed Morsi and “rise up” to stop Obamacare. “You know they revolted in Egypt against the oppressive actions of the Muslim Brotherhood, and this example of state socialism is something that Americans should rise up against,” Pat Robertson said Wednesday on the “700 Club,” referring to President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. He added, “They snuck that thing by us.” Then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called for passage of Obamacare, declaring,...

NORFOLK, Va., April 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy announced smoking will be banned below decks on all submarines effective Dec. 31. "This policy was initiated for the health of the sailors who choose not to smoke," said Lt. Commander Mark Jones, spokesman for the Commander Naval Submarine Forces in Norfolk, Va. "It is unfair for them to be exposed to the unhealthy side effects of secondhand smoke." Jones said a 2009 study by the Navy found non-smokers were exposed to secondhand smoke on all four classes of submarines, CNN reported. The Navy has 71 subs with 13,000 sailors on...

A practice that honors members of the military has become controversial in one part of Litchfield; putting yellow ribbons on the town green trees is prohibited. Things were contentious at a board meeting, Wednesday evening. The committee that oversees the public green in Litchfield originally said no yellow ribbons at all for the troops. There were originally dozens tied to the trees on the green and townspeople say it has been like that for years. But someone cut them down. Tonight the committee voted to allow one ribbon in the center of the green. "[I am] very angry, very frustrated,"...
