A practice that honors members of the military has become controversial in one part of Litchfield; putting yellow ribbons on the town green trees is prohibited.
Things were contentious at a board meeting, Wednesday evening.
The committee that oversees the public green in Litchfield originally said no yellow ribbons at all for the troops. There were originally dozens tied to the trees on the green and townspeople say it has been like that for years.
But someone cut them down.
Tonight the committee voted to allow one ribbon in the center of the green.
"[I am] very angry, very frustrated," said Mitch Garden of Litchfield. "I think they made a very weak decision, they took the easy way out on this one."
"I am not happy, I am not happy at all other than the flag," said Leslie Caron of Litchfield. "This is what they offered us in December: one ribbon."
Reporter: One ribbon for troops that are giving their lives for our country; did you just turn you back on that? What do you say to them?
Board Member: What do you say to that? You were at this meeting."
Reporter: "I am not the one making the decision." Board Member: "I say that I am sorry that I can't meet everybody's need and one person's idea of how something could be."
A "standing room only" crowd had a different idea.
Steve Ardussi has a son who just arrived in Baghdad this week. He is a Major in the Army with 12-years of service in the First Armored Division.
His father wants to put up a ribbon for him and let his son know he is not forgotten.
In regard to just one ribbon, Ardussi responded, "It's not symbolic of what it means. When you walk through the town green and you see 50-100 ribbons, each service member is represented; that is what we had seven years ago. When the ribbons first went up they were there for seven years or more."

Tie a yellow ribbon around the necks of the board members.
I would say to anybody who wants to put up yellow ribbons or American flags... If you put it up, you are responsible for the maintenance. I have taken down dozens of American flags over the past nine years, along roadways and bridges, because people put them up and walk away, thinking their patriotic duty is done. After six months, those flags are tattered, dirty and a disgrace to the country the person putting them up sought to honor. I take them down and bring them to the American Legion hall for proper disposal.
The same is true for the yellow ribbons. To anybody who cuts down an old, tattered ribbon, I say more power to them.

As I recall, Litchfield was the home of America’s first law school. Its been all downhill since then.

Does anyone know the proper etiquette for this? I don't have an “old oak tree” but I do have several Bradfords.
I would like to tie a ribbon on each but I don't want to break etiquette.
All residents who wish to put up a ribbon should do a quick, surgical strike at about 3AM in the town square. If a few hundred people show up...it’s not as if the cops can arrest them all. And the cops probably wouldn’t care.
You will have a child in a war zone. Etiquette is any damn thing you want it to be! Hang 20 yellow ribbons on each of your trees and surround your property with flags and prominently display your blue star banner with a spot light on it 24/7 until she returns.
Then put a big sign in your yard with the words:
Put up whatever you want to put up. She's your daughter, and she's putting her life on the line for the rest of us. Thank you both.
I'd suggest that whatever you do choose to put up, should be maintained and replaced as necessary to keep a respectful and respectable appearance.
You could put up a blue star placard in the window of your home, but then they’d probably have some libtards pass an ordinance banning that dangerous practice as well.

I am in rural NC surrounded by dairy farms and horse stables. This is down home 4x4, huntin and fishin country. This place is a lib’s worst nightmare. I doubt any ban on flags will be here anytime soon.
