NewsChannel 11 is learning about memorial services for fallen Lubbock soldier Andrew Velez. Andrew's body arrived in Dover, Delaware Thursday afternoon. The 22-year-old was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday. Andrew's father, Roy Velez tells us they don't have a specific day set for the service, but he expects it will be sometime next week. LUBBOCK -- Less than two years ago, Roy Velez got the worst news a father could get: His oldest son was dead, killed during combat in Iraq. This week, his pain only deepened with news that his youngest son had died in Afghanistan. Military officials notified the Velez family Tuesday of the death of Army Pfc. Andrew Velez, 22. BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two soldiers from Task Force Baghdad were killed and five wounded Monday in a rocket attack in southern Baghdad, the military said. The attack happened at 8 a.m. local time, the statement said. No further details were provided. The names of the dead American soldiers were withheld pending notification of their families. More than 1,000 members of the U.S. military have died since American-led forces invaded Iraq in March 2003.
